Hey,
What I want to do, is take a basic cable television program. Which is on Fox (channel 12) and use my VCR (JVC Pro-Cision 19 HEAD) to record it onto a blank tape. I have my VCR connected so I can play regular movies. I have tried recording using the both connectors, the cable connecter (the one with the single pin sticking out that screws into the wall) and the I/O Connecters (red, white, yellow) If anyone could give me a step by step process on what to do, using either connectors that would be great. Thanks for feedback. Bye

Connect the coax cable, then go into the setup menus, select cable for input, then autoprogram the channels.

I'd like to know what a coax cable is, what setup menu you're talking about, and what is autoprogram?

Coax is the round cable that the cable company uses. If you press the menu button there will be a setup menu where you can select cable or antenna. There should be a program channels menu there too.

Connect RCA jacks from the satellite to the VCR and set the VCR to line. There should be an input button on the remote to set the VCR to line.

If there's no button for line input, use the VCR tuner's up and down buttons to tune to channel L-1.

Connect the antenna to the in on the VCR. Then go into the setup menus on the VCR and set on antenna, then use autoprogram to set the channels. When you're ready to record set it on channel 7 and set the record speed.

Is it possible to connect the VCR to antenna (RF input) and take the output from the RCA(red, yellow and white) pins. My TV has only the RCA input working. Basically will the VCR take RF as input and give RCA output?

Yes that will work! basically what you will be doing is using the VCR as an external tuner, just plug the RCA output on your VCR into the RCA input on your TV and use the VCR to change channels. I do it all the time to watch cable on my LCD video projector which only accepts RCA inputs.

I am tring to play back my video from my DV camcorder. I have followed the instructions for connecting the camcorder to the VCR listed above. I can hear the audio, but I don't see the video. I can kinda make out some images, but I mostly see a blue scrambled screen. What should I do?

Hello, I have digital Warner cable and I want to watch one show on the cable box while recording a different show on the vcr. Or just record shows on the vcr while tv and cable box are off. How do I hook that up please? I have tried cable to vcr to box to tv and I have tried cable to box to vcr to tv. Neither allows the vcr to use it's tuner. All I get is blue screens unless I tune the vcr to channel 3.

You can only record analog channels while watching digital. Split the incoming cable to the box and the VCR, that will allow the VCR to record analog channels.

Hardy, your problem is macrovision protection.

It's not Macrovision on a camcorder.

Hardy:

Could be dirty/bad heads on the DV CAM or a bad tape. Does it play back scrabbled on the camera's LCD also? If not then there is probably a bad connection somewhere between the camera and VCR. Try a different tape, try wiggling the cables, if picture gets better or worse then it's a bad connection. Does the VCR exhibit this symptom on all inputs or just with the DV CAM?

You have to hook up your cable connection to the VCR's built in tuner. Then use the VCR to select the channel you want and hit record.

What is this "set vcr to line" or "L-1"? I'm trying to use my JVC(HR277MS)VCR as an external tuner. Lost my original remote and got a universal. Hooked up the coax RF(in), but can't get a menue to tune in or select input. I do see, however this L-1 on the screen. How do I tune in?

You need to get into the menus. You could try unplugging it long enough to reset, then it might autoprogram the channels.

I have a JVC Pro-Cision 19 HEAD VCR (Model Number HR-VP672U). I have lost my remote to this device. I am trying to change the Tape Speed from SP to EP. I have not been able to figure out how to do this without the remote that was shipped with the VCR. As a result I can not tape over 2 hours.

I have cofigured ny Direct TV remote to control the VCR, but I am still unable to switvh the tape speed. Has anyone encountered this problem with this VCR or can help me change the Tape Speed.

If it has a menu button on the VCR, and you can't change it in the menus, set a short timer in EP, then it may change to EP after timer recording.

If there isn't an antenna/cable select, it will do it automatically when you autoprogram the channels, which is what you need to do.

Help. I've had the satelite guys out twice and they can't seem to fix the problem. I use to have cable and now I have satelite. My VCR I am assured is connected properly and acts like it's recording but the tape is still blank when done. I was told to put it on three to record and I do but still nothing. The vcr is six years old and does play tapes but won't record now. It did record when I had cable. The menu setup only allows for tv, cable tv, or axl but not satelite. Can you not time tape with satelite? If not I'm cancelling since I'll never get to see anything since I work evenings. Thanks for any help. Liz

Autoprogram the channels, set the antenna/cable to cable first. Put it on the channel you want, select the tape speed and press record.

Can someone out there please help me? I have a Panasonic Omnivision VCR that has me pulling my hair out. I have the basic connections. Cable box to "In From Antenna" on the VCR. Then I have a cable running from "Out to TV" on the VCR, to the TV Input. My TV is an RCA. The problem is that the VCR will not play any tapes that I record from Cable. The VCR seems to have trouble "tracking" the recording. It will play for a few seconds then then the tape starts "skipping". Then there is a blank (blue) screen. The display says "SP" for speed, but I record all my tapes on "SLP" speed. Oh yeah, when I attempt to play my favorite "pre-recorded" tape, there is no problem. What gives???

It either needs cleaned, head cleaning tapes don't work, it's out of alignment, not usually a problem with Panasonic, it has a bad pinch roller, or a tension band problem.

A few days ago I purchased a Sony 4 head VCR so that my wife could program her favorite Soap Operas and watch them at night. I think I got burned! When I started reading the manual, it mentioned that this machine had a 1 month, 8 event recording timer. Does this mean my wife only has the option of programming 8 events per month??? She likes to program every morning before she goes to work. When I did a search on the website of my favorite electronics outlet, it seems that almost all of the vcr's listed had similar limitations. Whatever happenned to the days when you could program a vcr with no such limitations. Where have I been?

Those 8 programs can be set to record every day. If she records the same thing every day, just set it for Monday-Friday, or daily if they are on every day.

I have a sony VCR, and i want to record a TV show onto it. But i suspect there is something wrong with the audio... Something in the back connects it to the antenna receiver, and the other connects to the TV. When I try to record something, I need to set it to either L1, L2 or PR1, I haven't figured out which one yet. But whenever I finally get the antenna recorded on the video tape, it has no sound. When I switch the input on the tv and go on the video one and try to open the menu, it doesnt work.. Is there any way you can help me hook it up properly/fix it/record the show onto the tape?? thank you!

Own an RF modulator and a DVD Player equipped with S-Video. Want to be able to: 1.)Tape any channel when not home (TV off)2.) Tape any channel while watching another. How should I hook it up. You can't record a digital channel and watch a digital channel at the same time, unless the box has dual tuners.

RCA cables are better for picture quality. If you want to use coax, out of the box to the in on the VCR, out of the VCR to the modulator. The VCR has to be on whatever channel the box outputs on to record, I'd guess channel 3.

Hi, I have a cable box, a combo VCR Player-Recorder/DVD player that does not have a coaxial port, and a flat screen TV and RF coverter. I have it hooked up so the prerecorded videotapes play well and also the prerecorded DVDs. When I play them, the TV program disappears and the recorded material appears. Now, when I press record (for the videotapes) it does record the channel I had been watching (but the screen is blank and I can't watch it. I have to wait and see it on playback.
There may be something on the hand set that allows me to adjust for this but I've lost the hand set and have ordered another. Help?

RF modulator should be connected to DVD/VCR video+audio in
You will need to set your DVD/VCR to record on LINE IN.

DVD/VCR video+audio out to TV video+audio in. Set your TV to LINE IN to watch what is being recorded.

Thank you Silver Member,
I did try this but without success. I will try it again when I can (my experiments are interrupting the family's watching the soccer matches), but here is the report so far. I hooked up as you said. From RF modulator to the VCR/DVD, the latter only has a white audio port (the instruction manual says to use only the white in this case). However I found no "LINE IN" anywhere for recording onto the DVD/VCR. The TV (no LINE IN) can receive from ANTENNA or CABLE. I did find, by pressing INPUT, a LINE 1 and a LINE 2, but neither worked. I tried keeping the coaxial cable between the RF modulator and the TV, and also not connected, no difference.
Thanks

I find it hard to believe that the DVD/VCR only has audio input. If this is true, then you are not going to be record anything. End of story.

It must have an audio in (red); that is what makes stereo sound.

As I wrote earlier, set the channel of the DVD/VCR to record on LINE IN.

It must also have a LINE OUT or you wouldn't be able to watch any DVDs with it. This is connected to LINE IN on the TV.

I am trying to record with a video tape from my vcr from satellite tv. I do have a satellite box, but I can't hook up the input from the satellite into the vcr. There's one input that goes from the box to the satellite dish and one that goes into the wall.

I have a VIzio tv with two sets of RWY cords, an S-video hook up and an RGB input.

My vcr is a jvc and both the vcr and satellite box have two sets of RWY inputs.

I tried setting everything up to record from the satellite, but when I did, I was able to record from the tv, but when I tried watching the tape, I got the picture that I had recorded but the sound came from the satellite (from the tv), not the tape. I have three sets of RWY cords and an S-video cable.

How do I hook everything up to record from the tv (with sound)?

the satellite box doesn't have inputs; it has outputs

To record whatever channel the satellite box is set to, connect from VIDEO OUT of the satellite box using RWY cables to LINE IN on the VCR; set the VCR to record LINE IN

I tried what you suggested but it didn't work. I get the same problem.

Here's what I have set up:

Line in vcr to line out 1 on the Directv box
Line out 2 on Directv box to AV1 on tv
S cable AV1 on tv to S video out on the vcr

I was able to record the program, picture is fine, but I get no sound. The sound I do get comes from the tv, not the tape.

S-video is just that video only.

You need to connect Line Out audio on the VCR (red+white) to AV1 audio on TV (red+white).

I have a really odd problem. I have a Phillips VCR/DVD combo. When I record a program live (by just pressing the record button on the remote), all works fine, But when I use the timer remote function, I only get video recorded...no audio. I have a cable box and LCD TV..both nearly new. What would be different during timer recording that would affect the audio. I've re-checked my cable connections many times and all seems correct.
Thanks.

That is odd!

As an experiment, I would set the VCR to a channel that you want to record and set the timer recording.

Then, I would set the VCR to a channel that is different from one that you want to record and set the timer recording.

See what happens.

hello everyone,

I'm hoping to get an answer to my question due to the fact that I've just about gave up on trying to do this. My problem is we had an old VCR/DVD combo break a month ago whichI used to record stuff that I DVRed from our comcast box. I've bought a Magnavox DVD Recorder and 4-Head Hi-Fi Stereo VCR, ZV457MG9 and whenever I try to record like I would with the old model, I play back what I recorded and it shows me whats on the channel at that time. I've exhausted everything I know what to do with this. I've tried connecting it with the audio/video cables and still nothing. I know it must be something small i'm doing wrong please help me!! thanks in advance.

Do you have the Magnavox connected to your Comcast box as shown on page 17 of the manual? Most likely you will be using RCA video cable (yellow) and RCA audio cables (red + white).

Once you have done so, you need to set the Magnavox to record from L1.

The set of jacks on the front is L2. And you can record using those as well.

Of course, you need to start recording on the Magnavox just a second before you start the playing on the Comcast box.

to be honest,I don't know where the manual is to the Magnavox so I'm not sure if its connected the way you explained it. you say set the Magnavox to L1 which i know how to do,but where do i set the jacks at L2???

Jay,

You can download the manual from Magnavox.com
That's where I found it.

You most likely have to use the remote to set the Magnavox to L1 or L2.

Hello, you seem to be da man on these tech issues! I tried to see if my question had already been answered before I bothered you, but I didn't see it. Problem: cannot record onto a video cassette from a satellite tv show.

I have a Sylvania VCR/DVD combo unit, (it is a slave tv, and so no Sat. receiver unit connected-the receiver unit is in another room.) and a Magnavox DV225MG9 A combo VCR rec/DVD play unit.

I can view video cassettes using the AUX channel on the tv. BUt I cannot record a satellite tv program (at tv ch. 03) while it is playing onto the Magnavox VCR. I tried all the connection diagrams listed in the Magnavox manual, and tried messing with the A/V cables too. No luck. Also tried recording L1 and L2, also no luck. Just get a black screen when playback.

current connections are: Sat. coax directly into the Tv at Ant. in.
R/Y/W cables connected to front of the TV, then to the back of the Magnavox combo unit at DVD/VCR audio out.

I tried using Setup on the Magnavox Remote Control, to see if there was an option to choose, cable or ant for recording, but there was no option there.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time.

You write:
1.)so no Sat. receiver unit connected
2.)Sat. coax directly into the Tv at Ant

So, which is it?
I'm confused.

Sorry bout that.
1. the Satellite receiver is connected to another TV in another room
The coax is connected in that room too. The installer called the
tv (from which I am trying to record) a "slave" tv.
2. It is all legal, we are charged an extra monthly fee for the slave tv.
3. So there is no receiver connected to the tv from which I am trying to record, but there is a coax line all connected to the mama receiver. It is the coax I connected to the slave tv, and has worked fine for years.
4. I was able to OTR using the VCR in the Slyvania combo unit
in the past (it is now broken.) So I bought the Magnavox in hopes of using it to record TV programs. { It didn't occur to me that the old combo unit could be in conflict with the new setup of the Magnavox? \blue}

Again, thanks for your brainpower.

Are you able to watch two different programs on the two TVs?

Is your "slave" TV always set to channel 3?

My guess, even though you don't mention it, is that your satellite receiver box has the tuner, so you use its remote to change channels.

Also, the ports on your Sylvania TV are inputs not outputs.

One thing you can do is to look on Craigslist or join Freecycle.org, and look for a used VCR that someone wants to throw away. It doesn't need to even be able to play a tape. Then, buy a RF splitter and connect its input to the coax cable coming from the satellite receiver box. Connect one of the splitter's outputs to the TV's ANT IN, and connect the other splitter's output to the used VCR's ANT IN. Then connect composite audio and video (yellow, red, white) from the used VCR to your Magnavox's LINE IN.

A second option is something like --> http://www.google.com/shopping/product/11337529557531884328
With this you will still need that RF splitter. This *should* work.

You can record on the VCR if the TV has a video output. From your description, you don't, so you can't. The one TV out is audio only hence red+white.

How is the TV getting it's signals?

I have a Philps DVD/VCR player and recorder. I connect to the TV with a RF Modulator. I cannot get the timer recordering to work. When programming the VCR to record programs I want to see later, all the programming steps work until step six in the manual. There I select L1 alright. Then it sys to "select the desired channel to recordon the external tuner". When I press the numbers for a channel, nothing happens. No channel is pre-programmed. All the remaining steps work so the VCR begins recording as timed. But there in nothing on the VCR tape.

Do you have cable service or do you get your TV signals over-the-air with an antenna?

How does the Philips get its video signals?

What model is the Philips?

We have cable. The Philips DVD/VCR combo is model DVp3345VB/F7. The combo is connected to the TV with a RF Modulator I got from Radio Shack. I do not understand the question about how the Philips gets its video signals. Again, the remote does not bring up the channels I wish to pre-record.

Do you have a cable box or you are connected directly to the wall F-connector?

There is no cable box. We are connected directly to cable, although I do not know what a wall F-connector is. There has never beena cable box.

Doug,

Your Phillips does not have a tuner.

To record a TV program, you need a tuner. Since your Phillips does not have a tuner, you need to use your TV's tuner.

The problem is your old TV needs to have video output and audio output, but since it needs a RF modulator, it most likely doesn't have these.

These connectors are yellow + red + white RCA jacks and will be labeled as VIDEO OUT and AUDIO OUT.

If your TV doesn't have these connectors, you will need to purchase additional equipment.

The reason for the RF modulator is the cables connecting to the cable and the TV had cable ends which did not fit the DVD/VCR. The RF modulator fixed that. The Phillips TV is model 20PT5441/37 and it has yellow+red+white jacks. They are labeled VA out, which I read as Video out and Audio out. The RF modulator is connected to the Phillips DVD/VCR with yellow+red+white jacks. The timer recording instructions say after selection L1, then select the desired channel to record on the external tuner. That would be my TV, but it isbypassed by the RF modulator and DVD/VCR connection. If this TV model has no tuner, then I will look into an external tuner.

I am confused by why you have your equipment connected the way you do.

You should be running a 75-ohm RF cable from the cable company's F-connector on the wall to the F-connector labeled 75Ω at the back of your TV. That's for your TV signal.
Then connect red+white+yellow cables between TV's AV Out and the VCR's AV In.

Set the VCR to record from Line 1.
Your TV will need to be on.

Nowhere in this setup is a RF modulator necessary.

I don't understand why changing your TV should change anything.

Without knowing your actual video routing, it is hard to know how to advise you.

You need to provide more information on what is connected to which port.

Hello Silver Member,I have more info about my post on 10/01/15,about recording a program from an OTA program while watching a program on my Dish satellite mod.#VIP211 hooked up to a Vizio E55 C! tv. What I have for my routing is a cable from my dish going to the sat.receiver,a cable from a OTA antenna to the sat.receiver ,a cable from antenna out of the sat .reciever to a 2-way splitter, one cable to my Magnavox VHS/DVD model#ZV457MG9, ant.in,the other cable going to another splitter, each cable going to two different rooms of the house( no problem there),out of the VHS/DVD ant.out going to the Vizio tv.I tried changing source,Line 1(rear)(line 2(front) ,Ch.4. Sat.receiver is hooked up to tv by a hdmi cable,an so is the VHS/DVD.What more do I need to do ? I tried to send some pictures but a message tells me to shrink the photos,I don't know how to do that yet.

You need to read the manual for your satellite receiver.

Read how to record from one video input while watching the other video input.

This is the only way to figure out what you need to do.
