A young man I know has Sony STR-DH130 stereo receiver, RCA BRC111072 blu-ray player, A pair of Polk Audio TSI 300 floor speakers and an Isgnia 39" TV. Right now, he states that he wants better sound than a table radio and TV speakers which is what this system provides. He has a few records that he wants to be able to listne to on this system. He is looking to spend between $100 and $300 on a turntable. Since I have not had a TT in a long time, I thought I'd get some advice from some record fans for him. As far as getting deeper into the hobby goes, he said he'll see what his future budget holds and how good his ears are at appreciating better sound quality. He told me to thank everyone in advance for whatever help anyone might provide.

.

There are no "recommendations" in that price range. There is what is available. If he's shopping new, there are several selections but no one table that I would say is "recommended" over another. If he's shopping used, there are numerous tables that would be acceptable though the Regas have long dominated that section of the market.

Okay, thanks Jan. I will pass that along. I think he's looking at getting a new table. Having anything better than a table radio of boombox is new to this guy, so he's easing into the hobby slowly.

I agree with Jan here. You might try e-bay or Craig's List to see what's available, maybe a Dual....Sony....Pioneer?

I believe there are some online retailers who specialize in selling used turntables, but I don't know any names.

I used to own this turntable. I see them fetching ridiculous prices today on e-bay, far more than I got for mine in 1988 when I sold it."

Some people are paying big bucks for them. I can't understand why."

Aaron:

Again, I say try to find a used Thorens TD-125 or 126 to start with, and look into Ortofon moving-coil cartridges.

These are products of known quality and extreme durability.

They don't make 'em like this anymore."

?????

Really??????????

I mean seriously, I don't think I want to confuse the poor guy with advice like yours Ornellooney!

You are making it way too complicated, as usual. I am trying to simplify it.

The guy needs a good Chianti, but you're going into the whole history of DOCG and Super-Tuscans.

Way too much information, and poorly presented.

WHAT!?!?! No one is complicating anything you moron!

...I am trying to simplify it'"

No, you're trying to and succeeding at being a troll, offering unwanted advice. Ornello, I am not about to pass on any of your so called "advice" to my young co-worker. Your advice sucks. Okay? You are stupid, foolish, moronic little troll with nothing helpful to offer. Go shove a utility pole up you butt and rotate the d@mned thing!

You have NO idea what you're talking about. We are not talking about history here, just helping an audio newbie to find an appropriate turntable. And I'm the one trying to complicate things? NOPE!

"I deny all the charges, vigorously. As usual, you are not being helpful."

You're an idiot Ornellooney, plain and simple and what you have to offer is of no help whatsoever. Jan offered what advice can be offered and got it well covered. There was certainly no need for you to post in this thread at all which should have been abundantly obvious to you from the start, but it wasn't because you are incredibly stupid.

I owned a TA-N88B that kept dying, but that had nothing to do with V-FETS.

Or, we can be missinformed like you Ornellooney.

I was clever enough to find the post in which you stated that your Sony V-FET amp kept blowing up after you denied saying that it did. Meanwhile, you aren't clever enough to cover your tracks, IDIOT!

Why are you livaving in 70's?

We are in 2010 and all your entire system is desuet, obsolete, old fashioned...

What are you talking about? It had nothing to do with V-FETs!

I no longer have any of the stuff I had 1977-1990.

I'm not living in the 70s. People who still want to play records are.

You can't even keep your criticisms consistent!

I didn't say that your amp blew up because of the V-FETs. YOU said that it kept blowing (you didn't identify the cause), so you got rid of it. Then, you denied saying that.

I certainly did not deny it! I denied that V-FETs were the cause.

Orney-looney knucklehead!

When Jan pointed out that Sony's V-FET amp was notorius for blowing up, you said that you sold yours for that reason. Later, you refered this crappy amp as "state of the art" When I mentioned the fact that they blew up a lot, you said, "Not at all, where did you get that idea?" When I said that you admitted it, you said, "No I didn't." Now you're denying having denied that the amps blew up. You're just a worthless fool Orney and that's all.

No, it did not blow up because of the V-FETs and I never said it did.

I sold it because it kept blowing up, but it was a glorious-sounding amp.

"No, it did not blow up because of the V-FETs and I never said it did."

Neither did I and that's not what this conversation is about and you know it. The V-FET amp blew up regardless of whether or not the V-FETs were the cause of it blowing up. You admitted the amp blew up, then denied that it blew up. Then you denied having said that it blew up. Then you denied having denied that it blew up. All the while you keep saying that the V-FETs were not the cause in an attempt to divert attention from what you said. This is all very transparent and you accuse me of not being very clever? Obviously, I'm much more clever than you are. You are an idiot Ornello. Deal with it.

I never denied that it died. That was why I got rid of it. But it was the best-sounding amp I ever owned. What I denied was that it blew up because of the V-FETs. Read all about it here:

http://www.thevintageknob.org/sony-TA-N88B.html

"Do read the USER technical review to understand why so many TA-N88s fried all too quickly - a fate which had nothing to do with the V-FETs."

Sony' OTHER V-FET amps had no problems with 'blowing up'. In fact, many of the TA-4650s, 5650s, 8650s, and 8550s are still to be found on e-bay. They did not have the problem that the TA-N88B had.

I owned a 4650 and a 5650 (both integrated amps), and an 8550 (100 wpc power amp). I had no problems with them at all. A few years ago I even bought an old 4650 just out of curiosity, to see what it would sound like today. It was fine, sounded just as I remember, but the rather low power was a drawback. Also, the pre-amp section of this integrated amp was not the best ever made.

Here is a review of the power amp:

http://www.multi.fi/~samppo/sony_tan8550.html

Remember, this was 1975! The retail price was $1000 then!

The reason I got rid of the 4650 was it was low-powered (35wpc) and the pre-amp section had a bit of hiss. The 8550 power amp was a much better purchase (made 10 years later, long after I had sold the 4650).

I never said that V-FET amps blew up because of the V-FETs. You are continuing to argue this point when I never said that V-FETs were the cause obviously to divert attention from your childish behavior, missinfo and denying that you said things that you did in fact say. You denied that your TA-88 blew up after stating that it did. Then you denied having denied that. You did that Orny and you know you did.
