I want to connect my audigy 2 platinum zs to my 5.1 surround kenwood receiver. I am currently using a digital optical cable, and I cannot get surround sound. When I test the speakers individually, (using creative mediasource) it will only recognize the front left and the front right speakers. Do I need to change settings? Buy a different cable?

i'm not positive about the setting but that is
what is happening.

2 things to check.

first make sure whatever software you are currently
playing from is set to surround.
second go to control panel go to sound settings
then the audio tab then advanced on sound playback
and choose speaker setup and select the corrosponding
surround format.

between those should do it.
if not i would have to see your setup to figure
it out.

Nope,
The Audigy cant transfer any "artificial" multichannel sound through the digital connection, only DD and DTS (from DVDs) will do so. For games and other similar sounds you will have to plug it via the 5.1 analog connection. This can be done with three miniplug to 2xRCA cables.

he is right about the non movie type surround
sounds you will need to connect the analog outs
to your analog ins on the reciever.including
dvd-audio.

however if you can't even get movies to play in
surround "which is what i thought you meant" then
try what i said.
