LPF level in 5.1 (Energy S8.2 sub)

I just bought an Energy S8.2 sub--nice tight bass sound. Anyway, I had my old sub's (a cheap Sony model)Low Pass Filter control set all the way up since I read that this was necessary to receive the full LFE channel in Dolby and DTS when watching movies. The salesman who sold me the Energy, however, said that if I set the dial all the way up I would be bringing it back smoking. He said to adjust it to an audio cd and to leave that adjustment for watching video. To make things even more confusing there is an Audio-to-video eq switch on this sub. And to make things more confusing than that, I have crossover settings on my amp of 60-150 Hz. If I leave the LPF set lower than maximum am I losing sounds from the .1 channel in Dolby and Dts? Does the amp's crossover affect this? Any advice on setting this thing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
