I just found a Kenwood KX-720 cassette recorder, and it plays tapes for a few seconds than stops because one wheel is not spinning, so the tape feeds out but does not get threaded back in. Any idea if I can fix one of the wheels at home?

No. Get rid of it and get a new one, if you really are serious in playing tapes.

You will need to go inside and examine the rubber rings that turn the mechanisms. You may have to unscrew some things to see them, I have had some success using rubberbands as a temporary solution. If the old broken band is still in there it will give you an idea what size to use but if it has come off completely you'll have to use some logic to figure out were it was.
