The Denon 1910 is better known for picture quality. I have seen a few reviews that said it had good audio. Generally the Marantz and NAD are known as the better units for CD audio quality, in this price range you are looking at.

None of those are going to be good cd players. If you need to use your DVD player as a cd player then the NAD sounds better than the other 2, but not by much.

Does NAD have a universal player under their brand name?

No but Denon has a good one in the DVD2910 which I own. It still won't sound as good for redbook cd playback as a the NAD C542 cd player but it is pretty good. The Denon's performance on all of the other formats is excellent.
