Hello i just bought a new home theatre system lg ht805sh and am connecting my laptop to tv via hdmi cable and i bought a new optical cable that am connecting from tv to home theatre to get the sound. am getting the sound but am not getting 5.1 quality ie surround sound any idea ???????????
Unfortunately there is not a simple answer, you will need to do some digging. If you've connected optical from the TV to the receiver you have the right connection.
The next thing you need to check is the program you are tuned into broadcast in surround sound. Only a few are, not even all HD broadcasts contain 5.1 audio (for example our local news is broadcast in HD, but 2 channel stereo).
Once you've played with programs make sure to check the manual for your TV to make sure it will actually output 5.1 audio. Some TVs like Samsungs do funny things with the audio, like only output from the Tuner and will not forward sound from the HDMI connections etc.
