So I'm in the market for a new PC. My personal PC has been shutting down and restarting randomly which prompted me to restore it to original factory state. Been getting blue screens of death and memory error messages. I thought it was hardware related because my machine would shut down randomly and beep once, pause, and beep twice, then go dead completely. So after restoring to factory I've been ok, for now. I have an HP pavillion with Vista. Many would say THAT'S your problem but I have to say I have loved HP from all the computers I've owned. That's like 3 desktops and 2 laptops.

So tell me what your recommendation is for my next PC. I surf the net most, media second with movies and such, no advanced anything with gaming or hardcore graphics.

I just need a good reliable machine capable of withstanding my needs for the next 3 years (my ever standing estimate of a PC's worth). I also don't want to spend 2 grand on it either. I'd love to own a Mac, so long as you can buy me one lol.

So throw it out there. I really only need the tower. I have a nice 22" screen and surround system now, no need for the whole package, just the tower. I've seen the $400 deals on Bestbuy. I'm not a rich man so any suggestions of a $2000+ setup will be taken on stride lol.

Any others?

I agree that HP is a solid brand of PC. I have owned my HP laptop for atleast five years with no problems. Can't say the same for the other PC's I've owned. Compaq, Dell, IBM, all junk. If you like HP then order one custom from them with the components you want. I made my laptop custom and I have no problems with it except for Windows Vista (Windows 7 wasn't out yet).

Man. Acer. Really lol? Or is that a joke?

It's pretty stacked for the $$ honestly though. Lots of ram and HD space.

Nice find Brad. Thanks.

I will shelf it until my HP tanks again. As of now it's still trucking, for now obviously.

I got my acer laptop brand new with lots of stuff for <$500 about two years ago and it's been awesome the whole way... I play games and online poker and stuff, with browsers open and music playing and it's still lightning fast...

Battery life is rather poor but you could definitely get one with a better battery if that's an important feature to you.

???

Acer is not an off brand, by any stretch. They are a massive computer company that owns Gateway, eMachines and Packard Bell -- to name a few. They are also the fourth largest PC maker (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus) in the world, and are #1 in laptops. They are hard to beat for no-nonsense, high performance gear.

I suppose because of their price I just deemed them second rate gear.

Prices have dropped probably 70% since you last shopped for a PC. You can do even better than this if you wanted to throw together your own.

Acer is legit. Seriously though, Paul, just about any 4-500 dollar rig is going to be enough for your web surfing and granny pporn downloads :D

Ya know Rob I have to roll with that theme. I really do.

I always considered myself an old school guy at least alongside most of you young gun guys. I liked my life one channel at a time and always seemed to lap it up that way. You know what today's world has done to "An old fluck like me"?

I'm a multi-tasker and I HATE it. I'm not content anymore with JUST watching something on tv or even surfing the web. I have to do both at the same time. I'm addicted to the digital world and it's totally against the world I was brought up in.

Just today, I have the Monday night football game on the tv, while watching a movie on a portable DVD player, while playing on an old PC (mines currently fucked because of hardware issues), and keeping up to date on email through my Ipod.

This wasn't me 5 years ago. I looked forward to the weekends and enjoyed the distance, from life. Today you can't enjoy that distance because technology follows you. I HATE that.

I want the simpler world back.

It was mine before. Do I have to pay to get it back?

In other words........................................

Will it be illegal someday to NOT be connected to the system like everyone else?

Will some poor fluck like myself have to pay a fine because I don't have a digital ID or some kind of connection to the electronic world?

Again I love the digital world and I hate it at the same time.

Those within my age bracket will understand.

It's making us smarter and yet more stupid at the same time. Information is at your fingertips but you didn't do the research you simply did a Google search. Those inside the "Now bracket" will say it's all relative. I say NO, it's not relative.

Ask Google how to cope with your own child's death. Ask Google how to deal with a spouse's infidelity. Ask Google how to put food on your table when you have $10 to your name name and the mortgage is 5 months past due and you're waiting for that notice on your front door.

It's all relative. Isn't it?

Paul, I know exactly what your behavior is like. It's ADD kicking in to a stronger degree in a sense. My cousin does the exact same thing, he sits on the computer and watches something on TV at the same time. I'm not sure how efficiently you guys are processing information in doing so but he's pretty smart and learns like that without any issues so I see no real problem with it. The problem is...he's pretty inactive. He's going to end up packing on the pounds and looking bad as he keeps up with it. It's not an issue if you don't really care about your physique but everyone does to some degree. I'm like you guys in the sense that I'll have multiple tabs running and keep switching through them without ever being done with a single page, it's weird. Just now I wanted to see what was going on with FB mid post haha and I've only been typing for a minute or so. Another thing I deal with is not being able to sit long at all, if I'm sitting still for 30mins I feel like I'm being lazy and want to get off my azz and go for a walk. I used to view my crazy activity as a negative thing and a form of OCD but now I just think that other people are far too INACTIVE.

Yup. The gadgets that make life easier will ultimately slow us down. Anyone see Wall-E? That will be us lol!!

Really though the more we rely on tech to advance us IMO we fall into a sheep mentality. Imagine how easy it will be to drive our cars not 20 years from now. Now imagine when, at 60 mph, your on board computer crashes and suddenly you're left to drive yourself! Most won't have a clue because by then cars will drive themselves and we'll be so out of the loop we'll forget how. Sure they will defend themselves and their cars with fail safe electronics and back up systems but you get the drift.

The same can be said with purchases. The internet has made it so easy to go into debt with clicks of a button that it's taken that buffer zone out of the equation. You know, that amount of time it takes to get to the store and rethink your intention? The net takes impulse buying to a whole other level. Even though its made UPS and Fedex richer.

I like my gadgets, don't get me wrong. I love the world at my finger tips and all the enrichment it has to offer. I just don't want to someday say to myself that I really don't want to travel to China and absorb its ancient culture because I've seen it all on the web. Google Earth is an awesome tool and I love seeing parts of the world I never did before, yet am I really seeing them?

like the multi-million $$ pro athletes texting and tweeting on the bench, during the game. That's addiction right there.

you have one nasty virus there Paul.... if you were using windows Vista , it's no wonder you got all those errors.

I can help you fix your PC like new. and put windows 7 on it .I will email you what you need to do( instructions and where to download all the software you need,) if you want me too Paul.

Just let me know .. i can save you money by not buying a new PC and keeping your old one and making it faster and way better.

after getting the software you will need . it will only take you at the most 2 to 3 hours to fix depending on the size of your hard drive.

Yes it is time consuming but all free to do. ya just have to trust me LOL

It's a hardware issue, not software. Reformatting or installing a new OS won't fix the problem. I was due for a new PC anyway. Been leaning on my laptop until after the holidays. Then I'll pull the trigger.

Thanks though Doreen.

HP..Dell..Acer/Gateway etc...all made the same basically with same internal parts....just like appliances..and most electronics...just a small few companies make the internal parts and then throw their own casings and name on em..

just bought a nice lil Gateway desktop from Staples for $299...Intel pentium 5.2 processor....4g memory ram....1T hard drive..windows 7 premium...and a new 20 inch LCD flatscreen Acer monitor for $79..and 3 yr extended warrranty for $59...homerun!..total cost was $439 plus taxes, but that also includes 4 years of home or in store full labor and parts warranty..

most things made now are made "disposable" and to last for a short period, so with electronics its usually best to buy the extended warranty..

I agree, since tech seems to move faster than natural wear and tear on out of the box PCs. Unless you build your rigs you're limited to what you pay for. Fortunately that cost isn't as severe as even 5 years ago. Back then Pcs were $600 and laptops were $1200 to start. Today? Less than half that.

Just picked up an HP Pavillion A1250n loaded with xp of CL for 140. If i get 2 years out of it im happy. Plus it has the duel moniter ports built in. Was trying to do that with my old pc and it was pita to figure out. Im done buying new pc's. As long as the used ones are reloaded to factory with a back up, i dont care. And I keep all my stuff on an external 1t hard drive, so if it die's right now, i dont care. This used one is better then my new one i bought like 2 years a go new. Bigger, faster, better. gl what ever you decided.

Believe it or not I haven't. Still using my HP laptop. My son hates me lol.

I NEVER considered buying any used PC. To me it's like buying used underwear. It's your dirty laundry on it and all yours so why sell it for some hack to find it even after you "delete" it?

My HP tower still works just isn't reliable. Still has hardware issues that shuts it down. I've deemed it ready for the box (grave).

Haven't had the cash to buy a new PC yet. Still living off the laptop.

Wish I were as rich as some of you all.
