hi all,
I know there are lots of threads on this topic but not sure which system to finalize. I am looking for something which has the best quality which I can get around 150$. I usually listen to rock and sometimes Rap.. I definitely like some bass but not as much to shake buildings or something.. suggestions greatly appreciated..
It also would be great if I can hook it up with my Tv
thanks in advance

those Panasonic traditonal mini-systems are pretty awful, you'll need to replace the main speakers with at least some cheap bookshelf speakers like the $50 Insignias at Best Buy.

the only things Sony still does well nowadays are its TVs and digital cameras.

Everything else is mostly mediocre to poor quality that gets sold by virtue of the brand name recognition among the Joe SixPacks of the world and a sizable advertising budget. Oh, and a pretty-looking design.

In other words, their home and car audio sucks.

Sony does not do digital cameras well. Digital Camcorders are another thing, but their digital cameras are not very good.

Mini-systems are awful. Just buy what you think sounds good to you and get it over with.

What do you expect for $150 price range?

Sorry to break this to you pal, but you can't have everything with that budget.

Anil,

Here's a FAR better alternative to a cheap minisystem:

Sonic Impact T-Amp, $30
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-952

Insignia bookshelf speakers, $48
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7705307&type=product&id=1138085354138

Toshiba 3990 DVD/CD player, $57 shipped
http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/Prodview.asp?g=54400&i=052SD3990

generic speaker cable & RCA interconnect, maybe $15 at Home Depot or Walmart

Yes a minisystem is smaller and prettier but sound quality will be far behind the above.

OK, I am going to try the above for either a bedroom TV or office setting. I did find 2 Mirage OMNISTAT speakers for $69 each at Tweeter on clearance. They originally sold for $249. I did order a better AC connector and a mini-plug, so I am still under $200.

My bedroom TV is a Technics 30" in widescreen HDTV (picture tube) with DVD. I will RCA out of the TV into the mini jack converter to the T-Amp. So it will be my CD and video source. HD DVR Cable box is HDMI into the TV. I have a mini-system CD / FM tuner at the office with line out should I try it there.

Of the few mini-systems I've listened to and owned, my favorite has been a Philips MC50. That seems to be out of production, but there are a few similar ones available at the philips online outlet store.

The key for the mini systems are the speakers. I've never heard any that compare with even an inexpensive bookshelf from a reputable manufacturer. Listen carefully before buying.

Instead of starting another OP, If I may highjack this for my personal search:

I need a portable cd player for construction work.
While working I don't really need super high end sound quality but it doesn't hurt. I have used those small shelf systems like the Phillips in the 1st link but they are not portable enough. I did at one time do as John V suggests and make up a portable with good quality small bookshelf speakers.
I also have a Cambridge Soundworks cd/radio but it seems too fragile for this use. It is bigger and heavier than the Bose Wave. I need portable because I have a ton of tools to drag around too.
Maybe the Bose Wave with a home made padded carry case would be the best solution? Probably my answer.

Because of the compact size and portability I alternate between a cheap, terrible 'boom box' cdp, and Tivoli radios:
a Model 1, a Tivoli Pal and a Tivoli Songbook. http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&client=safari&rls=en-us&q=tivoli+radio&um=1 &ie=UTF-8
Because the Tivoli sounds good enough for this use I am considering the companion cdp, BUT the Tivoli dealer at Hawthorne, Seattle said it is not reliable. I do know one person that has one with no problems.

While the Tivoli will work with iPod, I have a lot more cds than time to load an iPod.
Another downside of the Tivoli portables is that they do not play loud. Ok in the bedroom but not for work.

Most of the trades men use the tool brand radios: Milwaukie, Bose etc. They are huge and have no cd.
