How to resurrect a lyra MP3 player with the error "missing/corrupt lyra_sys"
============================================================================

1) Open up your lyra MP3 player.
2) Write down the orientation of the HDD in the player, so you won't forget which way round the HDD connects.
3) Remove HDD CAREFULLY (cable is FRAGILE!).
4) Cut a normal mainboard jumper in half across the middle to make a mini jumper.
5) Attach mini jumper to A-B on the HDD jumpers for "Cable Select".

On the HDD the jumpers are at the end of the drive next to pin 1 on the IDE connector:

ooo1 AB
ooo2 CD

6) Use a laptop HDD adaptor to connect the kyra HDD to your PC.
7) In Win XP go to "Administrative Tools" "Computer Management".
8.) Select the "Disk Management" icon.
9) Select the lyra HDD and create a BLANK partition with NO file system...
(i.e. select "do not format" when asked for the file system type)
10) Use H2FORMAT to format the lyra drive as FAT32
(e.g. with the syntax: H2FORMAT x: [X: is the drive letter for yout lyra HDD])
[H2FORMAT is available from a link on THIS page: http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/96/90/ ]
11) Download the lyra firmware update AND software from THIS page...
[try to look at the design of your player - look at the case - match this to the picture on the RCA site, then select those downloads]
(for a USA player you can find the product number on the back of the player, for EUR you have to match the case to the USA model)

USA Players download link
http://support.rcaaudiovideo.com/select.aspx?u=downloads

12) Use Winzip to extract the firmware update to a temporary folder (e.g. c:\1).
13) In Explorer go to "Tools" "Folder Options" and be sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected.
14) Go into the folder you extracted the firmware update into and look for the "lyra_sys" folder.
15) Right click on the "lyra_sys" folder and select "properties".
16) Select "hidden" and click OK - then select "apply to the folder ONLY".
17) Copy the hidden folder to your newly formatted lyra HDD.
18) On your lyra HDD also create the following folders (!!!case sensitive!!!).

lyra_playlists
MUSIC

19) Copy your MP3 files into the MUSIC folder.
20) Shut down the PC and put the HDD back into your lyra - be sure to get the HDD orientation correct!
21) Power on your lyra and watch it start like normal!

Heh, I can see why so many people have issues with these damn things!

The Lyra works fine as a standalone unit...(providing that you are prepared to transfer songs to the Lyras HDD when it's connected to your PC on an IDE cable)

But WinxP REFUSES to see it in Explorer!

(even though it's detected fine via USB - even shows a drive letter in the USB properties! Just not in Explorer...)

Seems like the region for these players is hardcoded into flashrom!

So even if you use the U.K. firmware on a USA player or vice versa, the player retains its original region.

(So if you have a U.K. model - you'll STILL need the original software CD. Just ignore the part about going to the USA site at the bottom of my guide.)

So what does this mean for USA users?

Well, you can use updated U.K. firmware on a U.S.A. player...

e.g. The USA model RD2854 = UK model PDP2845

Latest firmware is:

RD2854 = 1.57
PDP2845 = 2.02

I have tested this and the "software" part of the firmware is interchangeable.(i.e. these downloadable files)

Only the flashrom remains unchanged - leaving your players region intact.

Have fun!
(don't blame me if you screw up though!)
