Acer Aspire 1410
We received the Acer 1410 a few days ago, very promptly delivered from Amazon. First impressions are VERY positive.
I have used several laptops and an EEE PC 901 before quite extensively. (The EEE was returned to Amazon recently after internet connection problems. Amazon returns were great, a full refund was very prompt, which gave me the confidence to use them again.)
The EEE was a great machine, and I was impressed size-wise. However, in retrospect, it was a capabale web browser, but had a mediocre screen and a performance unsuited to medium or heavy usage. My wife found the small keyboard fiddly and difficult for extended use.
The Acer on the other hand has pretty reasonable performance. Granted it is never going to be a top end games machine, but it runs all the things I have tried on it. All YouTube videos have looked great. BBC's "Life" on iPlayer looked fantastic on the high resolution screen. The wider screen resolution also makes web browsing easier. I have not required any sideways scrolling at all. I have tried out OpenOffice 3.1, which runs very quickly and is close enough (and compatible enough and free) to Office 2000 for both mine and my wife's work needs. The keyboard is top notch, feels completely full size, with good travel and response. I have no bother touch typing (as far as my limited typing goes!), though find the flat unsculpted keys odd.
The 250Gb hard disc is great in a machine this size: It will become our iTunes base once all our songs have been transferred. The 6 hour battery life quoted is about right as an average. I get a little more than this with light usage.
My machine shipped with Windows 7, which looks good on first impression. Better than what little use I have had on Vista. I timed start-up at about 1 minute 20 to full active status, and about a further 2 seconds to get the Wifi connection. Shut down is less than 20 seconds. This is much better than my experience with XP or Vista on any machine, but no match for anything running Linux.
I felt the EEE 901 was good for its basic purpose and a great small machine, but had too many compromises. It could not really be used as a second PC for work or any serious use. The Asus, while a little larger, is still truly very portable, but more importantly, if you are not bothered about 3D real time gaming performance, it is truly a PC.
Want a machine you can really use on the move? I don't think you could do better. Pricey compared to other netbooks, yes, but worth the extra for the massively increased useability.
