Acer 3810TG Timeline

(3 out of 5) by Jon on Oct 28, 2009 (London, UK)
I was looking for a truly mobile laptop that would double up as a work and entertainment platform, with a battery that could cope comfortably with my long daily commute by train. Generally I'm happy with it as the 3810TG meets most of my requirements but low price, mobility and battery life come at a cost...

Good points:
It is genuinely light enough to carry about all day and use on your lap whilst travelling.
Great screen for watching video and looking at photos.
Fast wifi.
A good specification for the money.
Acer offer a reasonably priced combined extended warranty and damage insurance.

Bad points:
I had only only owned it for a week before Acer issued a product recall.
The internal speakers are lacking in power and base.
The 8hr+ claimed battery life is misleading - if you are actively working on the laptop in performance mode it will only last up to half that time. Using my 3G mobile broadband card drains the battery even faster.
The processor is slow compared to my previous Centrino Duo laptop and is frequently working at 100%. Not a good platform for gaming or software development.
The downside of being thin and light is that it is vulnerable to damage. How long will it last being bashed about in my bag each day?
