Gadget of the year??

(5 out of 5) by K. MacConnachie on Aug 24, 2009 (Elgin, Scotland)
The RHTG550 is very good piece of hardware. It produces crisp sound with rich bass tones, looks great, is easy to install and works perfectly with Bravia Sync (Sony). The speaker system is really sexy in appearance and goes perfectly with any black, shiny TVs and devices. It is solid and sturdy feeling. The radio function is good, but the only negative I draw is that it does not have DAB, that I would have almost expected in such an advanced bit of kit. The sound comes out perfectly in time with the picture and it sounds great with MP3's with the inbuilt technology. It fills a medium corner of the room and looks great with a 37 - 40" TV.

I have a KDL37W5500U Bravia TV, Sony Blueray player and PS3 and connected to the speaker system with HDMI and optical cables. Any Bravia Devices link directly to the RHTG550 via HDMI which in turn has one HDMI route to the TV. The TV (and I suspect most new TVs) connects optically back to the RHTG550 for a perfect sound, but I found that for some reason, PS3 does NOT support Bravia Sync. No worries, as the PS3 still works in full HD audio by wiring the it directly to the TV by HDMI and it forwards the highest quality back to the RHTG550 (so any HD console would do the same).

What I am trying to get at is that I walk into the room, turn the TV on and with the press of just one extra button... ZAP - the blueray player and speaker system activate in sync. You turn up the volume on the TV and the speaker system takes over all sound aspects, sounding great through the Digital TV freeview built into my TV. The Bravia Sync continues to work by making sure there is no `faffing' around with selecting the correct input, so when you turn it to TV, Blueray or PS3 it always comes through the speakers switching mode automatically. The quality is full HD 3.1 surround sound with S-Force PRO which is a noticeably wide sound. It is phenomenal with no hissing, buzzing or interference.

I would recommend this for anybody with HDMI and optical outputs from their devices. I tested an analogue source from my blueray player and it was tinny and flimsy sound, I tested a well known satellite broadcasters recording top box with phono cables and everything sounded horribly digital and low quality. I think this is to do with the quality of the other devices rather than the RHTG550. I would only recommend getting the bigger RHTG950 if you have a massive TV , loads of space and are desperate to experience 5.1 surround. I do not have any connection with the product. I'm just an ordinary punter impressed by this technology.
