Sony Walkman S739 16GB
OK, I'm completely new to MP3/4 players so it's easy to impress me. However, the quality of this little machine is amazing. Easy to navigate, battery lasts ages and drop and drag software a doddle to use. Quality of video clips is superb and I've already watched a BBC i-player download on it.
Only slight negative? The earphones that came with it. Might be my ears are weird but I quickly bought a pair of Sennheiser C300s which sound much better and the noise cancelling feature isn't a big loss.
Overall? Completely recommend.

First Time User
It took me quite some time to work out the basics such as switching it off. Probably not a problem for those who have already used a simmilar device. I didnt need any of the bundled software as it worked perfectly well using Windows Explorer to drag/drop files from my computer. The sound quality is excellent as one would expect. The unit is compact, lightweight and good looking. My one disappointment was the poor radio reception. The headphones lead forms the ariel, which is very sensitive to direction. I dont suppose there is much that can be done but I certainly cant listen to the radio while moving about. Since this was the main reason for my purchase, I dont suppose I will be using it often.

Fantastic
Throw away your ipod, this blows it out of the water. Use with good earphones Ultimate Ears, Shure or Klipsch. Use 320bit/s compression for MP3, faultless reproduction. Worth every penny!

If there is better, I would be surprised
I read all the reviews on Amazon and Which before I bought the Sony, and in the end I thought I cant be going too far wrong and I was right. It really is; easy to use, massive memory, I think it sounds great easy the best MP3 player I've ever used, the radio seems to be getting better the more I use it, I get a descent enough reception on a tube train (obviously not underground).
Its was a little more than I wanted to pay but you do get a beautiful bit of pocket tech. If there is better sounding out there I'm sure I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
The down side is the Sony software that it came with, I found Microsoft Media Player a better way to go.

Finally, competition for the iPod
I bought this as I refuse to buy an iPod (mainly because of iTunes) and having been a loyal customer of Creative for many years, decided their products just weren't good enough.
It's a gorgeous MP3 player; it looks nice on the outside and the menus are easy to navigate. The sound quality is brilliant and once you get used to Windows Media Player it's easy to transfer music. The noise-cancelling headphones didn't cancel as much noise as I'd expected, but this could be because my expectations were quite high! I'd really recommend this as a much-needed alternative to the iPod.
