Fantastic

(5 out of 5) by G. C. Brown on Apr 18, 2009
I can't understand the 1 star rating I have found it fantastic. Transfers all files with drag and drop no need to install software. I also use Media Jukbox 12 (free at time of writing, I paid a few quid for MP3 converter licence. Software automatically converts non supported music file types when transfering to player) no issues and the software recongised it. Sound quality is excellent for this type of device. Video quality is very good and I watch BBCi Player programmes on it no problem at all (BBCi maybe limited to UK model only you need to check). Noise cancelling - it is built in the player when using the supplied earphones no batteries no lumps in the wire. I guess you can use your own noise cancelling headphones but the built in feature needs the supplied headphones (on/off switch). The noise cancelling works but don't expect total silence, I have never tried any other so nothing to compare with. Checkout the spec!!! If it doesn't play the file formats you want then get something else. I have always found Sony equipment not very flexible on file formats. A quality product, everything it is supposed to do works well for me inc radio. V.Easy to use menu. It does not have a case but I got a leather one from amazon for a few quid (Easyi)which does the job. I also bought a 240v usb adapter but not the sony one. The usb cable has a unique connector at the player end not a standard usb (cable supplied with player). The supplied headphones will only plug into this player but you can use any standard earhone jack plug.
The socket is key hole shaped to take both std jack plug or supplied earhones (key shaped).

Looks great, sounds great, easy to use

(5 out of 5) by S. Gow on Apr 17, 2009 (Scotland)
Did lots of research on mp3's before choosing this one and I'm soooo happy with my choice! I was considering the Ipod Nano 8 GB but at the same price, this had 16GB and a longer battery time. The biggest reason for choosing the sony was the ability to drag and drop files using windows explorer - I HATE itunes!! You can use itunes, WMP etc.. and there is free software but I've found it so quick and easy to just use explorer. I haven't tried video like one of the other reviewers so can't say how that works. We bought it to use in the car - plugs into the DAB radio - and wanted a player that was easy to use so you didn't have to mess around with too many buttons or menus and this is perfect!

Good looks, great usability, battery life offset by lack of Mac compatility

(4 out of 5) by J. A. J. Eccles on May 27, 2009 (Bristol, UK)
I've had my Sony A Series for almost a month now and it has largely been a pleasure to use. Intuitive user interface and menus, very good screen clarity, excellent battery life and good looks are only offset by the lack of software and hardware compatibility for Mac users.

Firstly it's a charming and stylish product to look at and has a nice feel in your hand. The brushed metal appearance of the finish is a really nice touch. The button layout is more attractive and easier to use than previous Sony MP3 player designs. The screen is small but of great clarity. You wouldn't watch a movie or tv show on it but for music videos and small clips it is more than adequate.

Switching from an iPod Nano the transition from the 'jog wheel' style button to the cursor style of navigation button used here is very simple and I've quickly found I prefer this method. This is helped by the superb user interface with clear menus. It's all easy to follow.

The FM radio I've only tested in a city centre area but reception was clear and it worked well. The battery charges from flat within a couple of hours and played music comfortably for around 8 hours without charging again.

The only significant downside I can see is a lack of compatibility with Macs as it doesn't even show up as a device when connected to my Macbook Pro. Fortunately I have a desktop PC as well and transferring files by 'drag and drop' from Windows folders is delightfully simple. Playlists can be created in Windows Media Player 11 (provided in the box if you don't have it) and easily synchronised with the device. The only niggle here is that Windows Media Player will not play the MPEG4 music files often used in iTunes although the Walkman itself has no problem with these. If you want to include songs in the MPEG4 format in playlists you'll have to convert them to mp3 format and you can download free software that will do this.

Unfortunately if you're a sole Mac user the lack of compatibility makes this product pointless to buy. But overall I've found it to be excellent to use and I'm delighted with it.

Superb MP3/4 Player...

(4 out of 5) by A. Hood on May 28, 2009 (Coggeshall, East Anglia, ENGLAND)
I purchased the Sony NWZS739FB 16GB MP3/4 player as an upgrade to the brilliant NWZA818B unit and I've not been disappointed! I was unsure whether it would compete, but I've no regrets. It the slimmest, most feature packed MP3 player on the market. Picture quality is second-to-none and the sound quality exceptional, the latter boosted by a graphic equaliser so you can personalise your sound preferences. The noise cancelling headphones are a great bonus and do exactly what they say on the box, i.e. cancel extraneous background bass noise to a fairly high standard. Unfortunately, when switched on, they do reduce the quality of the sound by reducing some bass and midrange, which is a great shame. And it is for this reason I've given this a 4 rather than 5 star rating. A quality unit like this deserves a quality pair of ear / headphones. Fortunately, I can use the earphones that came with the NWZA818B - which are outstanding - and only use the noise cancelling phones purely for air travel as they effectively drown out the drone of jet engines by 80% approx. My advice to those wishing to purchase the Sony NWZS739FB 16GB MP3/4 player is to use a separate pair of quality phones to get the most of its superior sound quality and use the noise cancelling phones for travelling by air, Tube, etc. where they're effective.

definitely worth it!!!

(5 out of 5) by Y. Yang on May 14, 2009
the best feature on this MP3 player is the noisecancelling function. It blocks out ALOT of background noise, i only turn up the volume to 9 the most when i'm on a noisy train and I can hear the music very clear with great surround effect!! MUCH MUCH BETTER than my ipod where i always have to turn up the volume so loud that it would hurt my ear sometimes.
