Very Good, Very Good Valued Unit
Please don't judge this Sony on the cumbersome nature of previous "ipod ready" units.
On the previous models, navigating your ipod was a nightmare. I could never get the Sony to even recognise the names of my tracks etc., and would instead get numbers i.e. album 3, track 3.
I managed to pick this unit up for £90, and was tempted by "new for 2009", and "Ipod QuickBrowse" on the packaging (I'm a sucker I know!).
Set up was easy - in my case pull the old Sony out, swap the connectors, and hey presto - ready!
The unit has a rear ipod cable - I prefer this config as you can wire it out of the way - into the glove comapartment for example - much tidier!
So I plugged in the ipod. As with previous units the ipod screen changes to a Sony screensaver. I did note with interest that my ipod classic was charging via the cable though.
O.K. to navigate using the Sony head unit. Oh oh! Seems the same as before slow, cumbersome, and only numbers represented!!
About to take the thing back when I spot a little magnifying glass icon. I wonder if this is "Quickbrowse"? One press later - ipod navigation heaven!!
Pressing the volume knob lets me select from album, artist, track, playlist etc. Then once selected rotating the knob lets me run through named items extremely, well quickly. Quickbrowse innit?
As if that isn't enough, pressing select divides the category you are browsing into alphabetical tenths. So for example if browsing albums, you now get to rotate to what tenth of your collection your album is likely to be in! Once there, a press of the knob and your back to album names, and can easily rotate through to your musical desire.
But there's more, and for me this is the big one. Holding down "mode" button returns control to the ipod. Yes!!! "Passenger mode" basically lets you run the ipod as normal - and "goodbye" dull Sony screen saver, "hello" pretty Apple interface. A boon when you are a passenger, or parked up for the weekend.
So in this one Sony have got it right. An ipod ready head unit that is ready for ipods!
All the other factors you'd expect in a Sony are there - Good sound, bass etc. The head unit even looks nice.
So, if you are looking for a sub £100 excellent ipod compatible c.d. car stereo, and you don't need extras like bluetooth etc., I give this unit maximum marks.
A Mooro big thumbs up, none-the-less.
