Sky is no longer the limit

(5 out of 5) by Philbee on Apr 29, 2009 (UK)
I was getting increasingly frustrated with my Sky HD box - has anyone else been bothered by the racket made by the internal cooling fan (like a hair dryer on full blast), not to mention the new confusing HD interface? Worst of all, I was paying over 30 quid a month subscription for it. So - if you don't watch Sky, Sky Sports, Sky Movies and the other umpteen channels you really could live without - go for this small, sleek, easy-to-use, and silent PVR that gives you all the terrestrial channels, BBC News plus BBC and ITV HD, amongst others. In less than nine months the box will have paid for itself in saved Sky HD subscriptions. Recording is easy, and installing it (using my existing HD dish) took ten minutes. My only complaint is the captured power lead - would a lead that plugged into the back of the unit add that much to the cost? Otherwise, a thoroughly satisfying purchase - particularly now I'm no longer contributing to Rupert Murdoch's pension by switching to FreeSat.

Great Entry into Freesat HD broadcasts

(4 out of 5) by A. B. Morris on Apr 14, 2009 (Wiltshire, UK)
This product really offers a great piece of value for entry in to the Freesat arena and then adding in the extra bonus of PVR. The picture output is fantastic with a noticeable improvement in the depth and contrast of the pictures shown compared to previous Freeview terrestrial signals. The HD content, though limited is fantastic and will, I am sure increase over time.
The PVR element of the FAOXSAT is great in terms of capacity, but the interface for recording and play back is a little too similar to a PC format, which does have a less intuitive feel about it than some other PVR's on the market. The TV guide though is very clear and simple to navigate, making the selection of material to watch and record relatively simple once you become familiar with the menu's. Overall, the FOXSAT - HDR is a great piece of kit that avoids the need for subscription services and gives you plenty of material for free including HD broadcasts.

Great Pictures!

(4 out of 5) by A. Lewis on Jun 17, 2009 (UK)
Got this after purchasing a new Sony 32V5500. Wanted Freesat HD with out paying Sky. Got a quad LNB sat instal. I agree with some other reviewers regarding the poor manual and poor designed remote,BUT the unit is brilliant!! Great picture and easy to use once you send about a week playing with it.

Top Class Product

(5 out of 5) by David DAVIES on Apr 30, 2009 (South Wales, UK)
Bought the Humax Foxsat HDR for my Mother to replace Sky. Simple to set up and operate with excellent results. Despite being 88 she quickly got to grips with all of the facilities, particularly recording which is one of her main requirements. The quality of the picture and sound is first class and HD reception is a revelation. Some people have complained about the layout and size of the buttons on the handset, they are small but after familiarisation this is not a problem. Excellent service from Amazon, delivered within 3 days. I currently have a Pace Freeview box which has never let me down over the last 6 years but will be switching to the Foxsat HDR immediately.

Novice users view

(4 out of 5) by Mr. W. Kennedy on Apr 27, 2009 (North Yorkshire)
This is my first foray into flat screen TV, home cinema and freesat. The Humax was delivered within the stated delivery time, and works very well. I have had some difficulty in setting up all the connections and getting everything to work as it should. After quite a few days I have managed to run almost everything I need from the Humax remote control, but I did find it somewhat difficult to get everything co-ordinated. Perhaps the manual could have been written more with the total beginner in mind, and not aimed at those who already have experience in using this type of equipment. Overall, a good product, and as I learn more, I shall probably gain an even more favourable impression.
