Nice laptop but appauling value for money
This laptop isa lovely looking and very functional piece of kit. It is however under-specced for the price by a very large margin. I own a Macbook Pro 2.33ghz machine which is a lovely laptop build et al. This is lower specced than mine and has a smaller screen. I paid £800 for mine....
The gentleman who earlier commented that it is not overprice is talking complete rubbish as I could find at least 5 laptops that were better specification for less money when I glanced only here on amazon.
If you are a musician this is also completely useless as apple have removed the firewire from the device. I own a Korg Zero 8 mixer which I purchased my laptop to work with specifically. This cost over £1000 and is now completely incompatible with this new device. Apple has been pushing this format for a long time so people have invested in it as opposed to the more common USB. Apple have decided in all their wisdom to now remove this forcing people to change their £1000+ audio setups or thier video cameras etc if they want a new apple.
In effect this is something only apple and jobs would have the stones to attempt.
CHARGING YOU 30% MORE FOR A LOT LESS - then again, millionaires like staying millionaires in my experience and Jobs is no different from any other on that one!

MacBook downgrade
This would be a very nice (albeit overpriced) machine, but for one thing - no Firewire. The old machine had it, this one doesn't. There's absolutely no work-around either. That means no fast external hard drives, no Firewire camcorders, no Target Disk Mode (to fix it/copy data & setting), no high quality audio devices etc etc. Don't say you weren't warned. Hoping Apple wise up and bring it back pronto.
It seems absurd for a computer / electronics to take away a feature in the new version of a product, whilst providing absolutely no upgrade, alternative or work-around. In fact it's such an unusual decision that I can't think of another instance.
Personally, as a long time Mac user, I wouldn't buy a computer without firewire, no matter how nice it looks. Big mistake.
On top of this, there are numerous examples of why this Macbook represent's appalling value compared to what's come before. I won't bother listing these as Maholy-Nagy's excellent review lays it all out perfectly, but i would strongly recommend reading that before buying. (Then wait for Apple to wise up!)

gosh
Just check out the review and product ethos on apple's website. This is a way premium machine; It's going to sell at premium money because it's a .. well premium product.

Seems more like a downgrade than an upgrade.
Are Apple joking? Did they get the term "more for less" mixed up and make this? I'm buying the older, cheaper and better version thanks.
flawless
apple have set about to create the most wonderful machines on the market, though macbooks may be pricey they are worth it. iv owned one now for 6 hours and it is clear these things are head an shoulders above anything else. dispite the one i own being the standard 2ghz version there is nothing standard about it. the aluminum case is very strong and looks gorgeous. the glossy screen is not much of a problem unless its got a direct light source behind it and the only real downside to the older base model is the lack of a back lit keyboard. but seriously if you intend to get a laptop just for emailing and the internet, these things are more than capable of doing that. they come with a very handy selection of applications and nothing else you dont need. it has almost certainly the smoothest operating system(and in my opinion, not that it really matters, the best). people have stated before you should buy one without hesitation, i can only echo this. for possibly the nearest in technological perfection man has come to, look no further. (or get a higher model)
