What a bargain!

(5 out of 5) by P. Wareing on Dec 2, 2008
The is the best budget value laptop I have seen in a while. Acer, who are becoming more reliable, and popular and selling this machine ridiculously cheap. With a good sized screen, the machine copes well with a good processor, intel core 2 duo, and with more than enough RAM to run windows vista premium edition. This however can be upgraded if needed in future, with a new RAM memory for about £20 per GB. The hard disk has 250GB memory, but after windows being loaded on etc, it comes to about 238GB. Still more than enough though. However, like myself who almost got caught out, making a back up disk is essential. I recommend that this is the first thing you should do out of the box as it does not come with one.

This is a very good value laptop and is still relatively up to date in terms of laptops.

Another good Acer laptop

(4 out of 5) by architect834 on Jan 2, 2009 (UK)
Another great Acer laptop!
First impressions were good - looks good, good keyboard, nippy performance.
There was a problem with the power supply which kept cutting out, but Amazon sent a replacement laptop without a fuss which arrived a a few days later.
The replacement machine has no issues and is working well.
In common with most consumer PCs these days, no Windows installation media is included. One of your first tasks therefore should be to burn two DVDs which form your Windows recovery discs. (Instructions are included.)
The machine is loaded with McAfee Security software on 60-day trial & you can activate a 90-day trial of Office 2007.
Also on the machine is a large amount of Oberon Media's games as demoware. Personally I find that annoying and spent a few minutes removing it all.
Overall this is a good piece of kit - and at the time I bought it (mid December 2008) it was good value for money. However, with the January sales in full swing, there are better machines available now for the same price give or take a few pounds.

Good Value for Money if it Works.

The laptop is a good price with great specs but the build quality is very poor and mine only lasted 5 months before the hard disc drive failed. I also had problems with a badly flickering screen (if you look up Acer screen flickering you will see this is common problem - the screen cable wire needs replacing). If you are in your warranty period don't put up with it as it progressively gets worse and eventually makes the screen unusable. I could temporarily keep the screen picture by keeping the laptop open at strange angles but eventually after a few months the whole picture went.
Next came power supply problems with the computer turning itself off even when plugged into the mains and then the hard disk drive failed.
I got a refund but I won't be purchasing another Acer laptop.
I know you get what you pay for but the screen construction in particular seemed very flimsy with a thin plastic panel around the screen. The base and keyboard are acceptable.

Impressive and a great price

Got this a week ago to replace my 6 year-old Dell laptop. Delivery was excellent (by Amazon Express) so I got it during my Christmas hol's. The PC has a great spec for the price and is really impressive - especially for photo's and video clips. Big improvement on my old machine - which was a lot more expensive in it's day.

It's taking me a while to get used to Vista and getting all the settings right for me to use my favoured websites, but that's because I'm out-of-touch with PC's and security.

PC comes pre-loaded with a trial of MacAfee and automatically downloads updates for this and Vista.

I have found that several of my peripherals need updated software to work with Vista. My Sony camera and MP3 player both needed updates ... which I found on the Sony website (support pages). Took a while to download, but now they both work perfectly.

Best of all for me is the improved memory and space which are both 10x better than my old machine! It's great to have all my files on one machine and loads of space for the future.

Very happy with it.

Great laptop

(5 out of 5) by P. A. on Jan 9, 2009
Excellent built quality and aesthetically pleasing....
Boot time (starting up machine) is very quick and the fan runs very quietly (almost silent!).

Overall performance of the laptop is great with a respectable spec that can run all the multimedia (vids, music, internet media content etc...) at a very credible speed! For the price.... just mind-blowing!!

A great buy!
