Returning to serious photography

(5 out of 5) by Andrew Millis on May 27, 2009 (UK)
Having been a keen photographer some years ago, I wanted a camera which had advanced features but which was also moderately compact so could at a pinch go in a pocket, and had fully automatic modes if I had no time to play with it. I also wanted a camera which was well built, and being quite heavy stops it being borrowed by my daughter. Which magazine made it their best in category, as did the editors of two digital photography magazines.

The camera came as quickly as ever (thanks Amazon). The first photo opportunity was a trip to a bluebell wood and the pictures I took from first use and in subdued lighting were outstanding quality. The macro feature allowed superb shots of the individual stems.

The two things I would point out is that it definitely benefits from a fast, high quality memory card, as this reduces the transfer time after the photograph is taken, and having a card of no more than 2Gb will allow it to be used in computer card readers (I bought a 4Gb and a 2Gb memory card; only the 2Gb card is recognised by my card reader and WinXP). You can of course connect the camera to the computer but it is quicker to upload using the card alone.

Well recommended.

Outdoor use only!

(4 out of 5) by J. Lancaster on Apr 29, 2009 (Tyne & Wear, UK)
Outside at low ISO this thing takes images as well as my Dslr. Zoom is good, start-up time is quick. 3" screen is highly detailed and crisp. Loads of manual controls should you wish to use them.
Indoors above ISO 200 the noise is ridiculous. If you want to use this camera indoors and want good images, buy a Speedlite or equivalent flashgun so you can keep the ISO right down.
Oh, and if you have large hands this may not be the camera for you (buy a dslr instead).
Nice camera, but could be better.

Canon G10

(5 out of 5) by J. Stather on Apr 10, 2009 (Warwick, UK)
I really rate this camera. We went for this, wanting a distinct step up from our compact digital Fuji, after considering an SLR. The bulkiness of an SLR put us off, but we wanted similar performance. The G10 responds really quickly when photographing moving subjects. The build and feel is reassuringly chunky. The dials on top are old-school clunky, like on my old Olympus OM2. The range of features is mind-bogling, but some of the basic settings are quite easy to navigate. The screen is big and bright, but stands slightly proud of the camera back, so I have covered it with a screen protector. The camera is rather expensive compared to some of the competition, but this tight Yorkshireman is happy with it.

I love my G10!

(5 out of 5) by LUMBER JACK on Apr 3, 2009 (DEVIZES)
Had my G10 my about 2 weeks - and its gone everywhere with me.
Good size, good weight, feels solid in the hand.
Quick to start, and quick to fire.
Has loads of manual settings and is super easy to find it all and control.
Nice bright LCD and long battery life

Only bad point, It came with no card or case (but what does!)

If you want top quality photos and something to play with - & don't want to carry around a SLR - get a G10.

Canon G10 Powershot - excellent product

(5 out of 5) by Mr. K. F. Wentzel on Feb 4, 2009 (London)
An excellent product, that fulfills all that was promised. One draw back though is, that it features so many things, that it takes a while to follow instructions to the more basic items, like reducing file size permanently in the camera, when taking pictures to name one of a few. There should be an essential written guide be included.
