Not a metal body.

(5 out of 5) by Mr. P. J. L. Collins on Jul 21, 2009
Although one cannot fault the camera in any way itself I would like to make it clear to others that it seems as though Canon are departing from their old bomb proof build quality and are now using predominantly plastic bodies, at least with this model, and the ixus 95 in part.

Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS

(4 out of 5) by L. Barton on Jul 19, 2009 (East Sussex UK)
It has taken a bit of time to get used to all the settings. Still playing around with the manual controls - not had much success with those yet. Have taken some great macro shots and its nice to have a pocket size camera to take everywhere. Am pleased with style, comfortable to handle and am now getting some fab shots. A perfect substitute for when I can't carry my digital SLR camera. My only gripe is no sport setting which makes it difficult to take shots whilst on the move -a fave occupation of mine to stop me getting bored while travelling. All in all though a brilliant little camera - For me, worth the extra cost.

Digital perfection...

(5 out of 5) by T. Letchford on May 26, 2009 (Kent)
For all intents and purposes, this is a very plain looking camera, but it has some astounding qualities: the size is fabulous, fits neatly into a small inobtrusive pouch on your hip, no fussy controls and those there are, are extremely easy to use. The picture quality is absolutley brilliant giving crystal clear photos with stunning colour matching on the large rear lcd screen. It has easy to use software which makes it very quick to download your holiday pictures to the pc... It is worth the very good price and for a first camera or for the more aspiring photographer would make an excellent purchase.

Ixus 980is

(5 out of 5) by Mr Peter Waine on May 15, 2009 (UK)
This is one hell of a camera from Canon a must buy if your fed up with lugging SLR equipment about but want the same quality of shots for a lot less bother.

Auto and full manual control is incorporated into this camera with all sorts of extra features that is at your fingertips for any shot that you want to take and it is a breeze to operate.

The moment you pick this camera up out of its box you can see and feel the quality your money as paid for and this is also reflected in the quality of the pictures too.

From flash to low light shots this camera never fails to please its bang on with exposure and colour balance producing brilliant shots time after time with fantastic pixel quality to boot.

Macro shots are breath taking in quality showing detail that I have never experienced before with some of the other digitals I have used, so if Macro is your game you are not going to get much better than the 980 at this moment in time at least not in the other compact range that's for sure.

To sum up you get what you pay for in life and with the Canon 980is YOU HAVE , its big bucks for a big performer and this is a camera that is going to be with you for a very long time.

Canon have produced a camera here that is second to none and if the only thing you can knock it on is the video side of it then you're in the wrong game and a compact HD recorder is what you really need.

You won't go wrong with this camera no matter what the subject form from Macro, Portrait, Landscape you name it this camera will do it and do it damned well and it's in silver or black too so what more can you ask for? I give it 20 out of 10 because giving just 10/10 would not be doing it justice.

Thank you Canon for a great product and for listening for once to what the customer wants in their compacts and doing something about it.

Who needs SLRs?!

(5 out of 5) by Van Damage on Apr 18, 2009 (UK)
This is really an amazing pocket camera. We didn't go for the latest Ixus 990 as it only apparently takes HD movies, and we don't have an HD TV so didn't see the point. The flash recharges very quickly. The focus is very quick so you can press the button at very short notice and get a great picture. The metal case looks robust enough, though not really able to fathom out why Canon dropped the titanium feature, as was a good selling point of the IXUS 900.

Another reviewer somewhere made a valid point that Canon, the brains behind this great camera, seem apparently oblivious that the memory card they provide is really pointlessly too small, so best to buy a big one at the same time as you get this camera, as you'll be taking loads of pictures.
