Not impressed!

(2 out of 5) by Jo Jo on Nov 10, 2009 (Surrey)
My poor Ixus 950IS was close to dying and I was on my way to South Africa.. so I brought the Ixus 870IS at the last minute. Camera looks smart and has a fab 3 inch screen.. However, picture quality the MAJORITY of the time was poor despite trying various settings (I'm not particularly a novice in photography!). I resorted using my battered Ixus 950IS for the last part of the holiday which provided me with much better image quality. Amazon were fantastic with delivery and refund, thankfully!

Excellent camera all-round

Just used this camera for 3 weeks touring Germany and Denmark and have taken some excellent photographs - not my skill, due to an excellent camera. No complaints.

A Significant Improvement on the Ixus 860is

(5 out of 5) by Mr. Stephen Pell on Aug 18, 2009 (UK)
I bought the Ixus 870is to replace a Canon Digital Ixus 860is that was a year old and had developed display and focus problems. Despite being at the end of the guarantee period, Amazon refunded my money without question once Canon confirmed the fault. My experience of Amazon customer service is that it is superb and that I can buy with confidence.

Having had a difficult experience with the 860, I was initially reluctant to go for an 870, but, the price and specification are very attractive and of the three Digital Ixus cameras I have owned, the 860 was the only one that was less than excellent.

The silver version was uavailable when I ordered and I was a little worried about what the gold one would look like. In practice, the colour is quite subtle and pleasing.

The 870 exhibits none of the poor focus problems that I had with the 860, nor does it suffer the significant problem with the power button being too easy to press whilst in a pocket or case. Canon have recessed the power button on the 870 and it is much harder to press accidentally. The command button structure has also changed from the 860 and whilst it takes a little practice, it is fine once you get used to it.

Pictures are bright, well focussed, display excellent colour rendition and exposure. There is very little shutter delay. The digital zoom is far better than any previous Digital Ixus that I have used and produces usable images, even at its highest magnification. Image stabisation seems to work extremely well at all settings.

The camera takes excellent pictures and remains highly compact and portable. Compared to my previous Digital Ixus 860is, Canon have returned to their normal excellent standard with the 870. Amazon price, delivery and customer service remain second to none.

Excellent produce

An excellent camera. Recommend filling your first chip with experimental shots before doing any serious photography - it will pay off.

Fantastic camera

(5 out of 5) by I. Doctor on Aug 2, 2009 (Perthshire, Scotland)
I have had a DSLR for years but fancied a compact camera for holidays and other occassions when it can be slipped into a pocket. This camera is loaded with features and is easy to use. Just back from holiday in France and am really pleased with the quality of pictures, better than my DSLR. Excellent zoom, good range of options for different types of scenes.Battery life good also. Can't fault the camera in any way.
