better than expected

(5 out of 5) by Michael C. Pullen on Oct 27, 2008 (u.k.)
purchased this item from 'Camerabox'from the Amazon page, this has to be the best on-line sevice I have had. Ordered lunch time one day and in my hand before 10 a.m. the next.Things then got better as the 870is is a better camera than I was expecting, I did not look at the basic manual but after the 2hr battery charge thumbed my way around the well built gem and all the controls and operations of the camera fell in to place with such ease. The reason for my choice is that Canon cameras seem to do what they are supposed to do with good reliability and the 28mm wide angle of this model was of importance to me. Speed of all functions is remarkable and the clarity of the big 3 inch screen makes picture taking easy. Give it a go if you want a great point and shoot, the wife who knows nothing about camera details picked it up and was taking great pictures and started shooting at everything, and was finding her way around the differing options available with ease. Thanks Camerabox.

Snappa

Have just got the Ixus 870 IS and am very pleased with it.The choice is a difficult one with several competitive options. The 28mm wide angle was important to me and the very good video quality and sound - in fact the video is so good that I'll use it on lots of occasions I'd have used the camcorder because its that good. The operating manual is huge and shows the large number of options you can have in the way pics are taken but I suspect most of us bung it on 'auto' which copes well with 90% of the the average shots.I can see my SLR being used even less as these compacts progress. As far as technical assessment goes of colour balance, sharpness, etc in my view all the leading makes provide good performance which is acceptable to the vast majority of users.A great little camera.

Great pictures, and easy to use. An excellent purchase.

This camera is great to use with a large 3.0 inch LCD screen meaning it is easy to frame and review pictures. The display is also easy to read in direct sunlight unlike the fuji camera I owned prior to this. There are plenty of manual options (ISO, focus method, metering) and scene modes designed to allow one to get photo's they want in more challenging conditions, though full auto is spot on a most of the time.

Compared to my previous ixus 950 pictures are clearer, have better contrast, sharper, and with less noise. An impressive improvement allround. I couldn't believe it when I looked at previous shots taken with the old one how much better my new one is. I'm impressed that despite the high number of megapixels crammed into a small sensor, I can take acceptable quality indoor photos in poor light with no flash at ISO 800, and good ones in slightly better light at ISO 400.
The camera also deals well with direct sunlight and exposure is excellent.
On the whole I would describe outdoor photo's as outstanding. As good as compacts get, and in good lighting not that far off the results from an SLR.

Highly recommended. And a considerable improvement over my previous ixus. Its also worth noting this has a 28mm wide angle lens. Great for group photo's and unlike the panasonic FX33 I've used there is no loss in sharpness at full wide angle.

So good that I bought another

(5 out of 5) by Angus Young on Jun 21, 2009 (Edinburgh, Scotland)
Not as small as some, but small enough to easily fit in the pocket - ideal when you are on the move. I like the wide angle feature and the larger screen. The auto settings are fine most of the time. Donated my first IXUS 870 IS to my daughter who is working abroad and bought the same model to replace it. We are both delighted with the IXUS 870 IS and it's capability in a wide range of indoor and outdoor situations.

A pleasure to use

(5 out of 5) by Susan Gee on Jul 21, 2009 (United Kingdom)
This is the 2nd Canon Ixus I have bought. Like the original Ixus 50 the Ixus 870 is a pleasure to hold and use. The features are much improved and the 10MP is on a par with my digital SLR which cost a lot lot more and doesn't fit in my pocket! I have been impressed with the optical zoom and recently shot some excellent wildlife photos which I have now enlarged and have on my wall. It is the perfect party camera and works well even in low-light, I like that I can use full auto when I am in party mode or switch to manual when I want more control.
