Great camera - usual high Canon standard

(5 out of 5) by SW Morgan on May 30, 2009 (West Midlands)
Bought this for work (I'm a surveyor) largely because of its relatively wide angle lens (28mm equivalent) and the robustness of Canon cameras (had 5 or 6 now, going right back to 35mm SLRs, replaced through upgrades but all still working, unlike some Nikons, Panasonics and Sonys which have not survived!). Dropped it (in its case) twice already and it's fine, unlike a Sony which lost its screen when dropped in an even better padded case.

My wife has the 850, which is great too, this one just seems easier to use, once you get used to the very different controls. Good quality shots, with the selection of the correct mode aiding quality even further. Good battery life, compact size although not too small and weighty enough to feel solid. Surprised at quality of video - will never replace a camcorder, but good enough for impromptu shooting when camcorder not available.

Ixus 870 - brilliant in nearly all respects

(4 out of 5) by J. Farrell on Feb 7, 2009 (uk)
The results from this camera are absolutely superb. I found the on/off switch incredibly difficult and it didn't always find the focus in less than perfect light

Easy to use, lightweight

(5 out of 5) by Angelique on Sep 2, 2009 (uk)
I bought this camera to replace my previous Pentax which needed fixing. I found it easy to use and lightweight. It fits into my handbag easily. The quality of the pictures is excellent even when I had to just point and snap to take a quick picture. The battery lasts ages and the controls are easy to understand. I would recomend this camera to anyone wanting to take good quality pictures with the minimum effort.

Excellent compact

(5 out of 5) by Chapman on Jul 6, 2009
I would recommend this camera to anyone looking to buy a compact. I've had it for a few days now and have been very impressed with the pictures I've taken so far, especially with the clarity at maximum zoom. The video is pretty good too!
It's nice to see that Canon appear to have listened to the (minor) complaints about the IXUS 860 and fixed them.
Although the layout is still quite similar, the 870 is a lot simpler to use having scrapped the touch sensitive circle on the back in favour of a wheel which simply turns. They've also included a proper paper instruction manual rather than just a CD.
The camera has 19 modes for various conditions eg. indoors, night time, portrait etc.. which are very easy to access and straightforward to use. I especially like the sunset option which enhances reds and has produced some great pics!
Cameralabs do a very thorough review of the 870 which helped me decide to buy it (I was torn between this and the IXUS 100)
