Sony Walkman - 16GB

(4 out of 5) by Scubasteve on Nov 30, 2008 (United Kingdom)
I bought this MP3 player because I was getting annoyed with carrying around my creative zen vision: m which by today's standards is a bit of a brick.

So how does it look? The S639F is incredibly small and lightweight, it can barely be felt if you keep it in your jacket/ pocket and it is ultra thin making it easy to handle. The volume controls are located on the side of the player with the USB connection on the bottom along with the headphone jack. The only other external buttons on the player are the 1. Menu 2. Option 3. Play/pause/skip button making the front of the player look neat and tidy.

The menu layout has been made simple and intuitive, selecting music/video/pictures is simple enough. There is also a FM radio tuner built in as well as Sony's 'Sense ME' feature which puts your music into categories such as relax, extreme and heavy (This isn't fool proof and I have found that some of my songs have been wrongly allocated to categories). The main display is easy to understand and clear showing the album art/ artist/ song/ album.

The player can be customised in several ways there are many themes available in a wide range of colours/ patterns. A 5 band equaliser is also available for those who like to tweak the music they are listening to as well as sound enhancers and a volume levelling feature. The sound quality given by this player is stunning, right up there with all the previous players I have bought. The headphones supplied by Sony are also extremely good (in ear headphones) making the music experience even more enjoyable.

You can download programmes from BBC Iplayer to put on the S639F. I have done this several times and I have to say even though the screen is smaller than you might like the video quality is excellent. Perfect for when you are looking for something to do on the train/plane or just when you're bored!

The only criticism that I have is the inability to create playlists on the go...playlists have to be created on your PC and then transferred to the player. I would have also liked the ability to add songs to the 'now playing'

This is a great little player for the price, wouldn't hesitate to buy again!

Amazing Sony MP3 (Again)

(5 out of 5) by Kool Keith on Nov 27, 2008 (Gwent)
This is my 3rd Sony Mp3 player and what a great product it is.
Easy to use, amazing sound but i use CX500 headphones not the supplied Sony, light in weight.
It does lack accessories and what I cannot understand is why Sony provide docking stations and other bits for the dreaded Ipod but nothing any good for it's own products. Sort it out Sony!!
There are other reviews on Amazon for this product that complain about using the supplied software disc...so why do people use it when all they have to do is drag the music over using explorer, also create your own playlists on your PC and drag them over. It is very simple and so much better that sonic stage.
Overall this is an amazing player and very easy to use and so cheap for 16gb and the battery life is so much better than Ipods.

Amazing piece of kit

(5 out of 5) by P. Luong on Dec 3, 2008 (London)
First review, but it really is worth getting, especially with the double memory price: 16Gb is plenty of space to have a decent music library, and leaves enough space to play around with photos, video and podcasts.

Upgraded from a Creative Zen V Plus (which was stolen from me) and assumed I would go for the Creative Zen or X-Fi, but after reading that converting videos can be tedious, thought I'd go for this for a change, which seemed to get great reviews.

Only had it a week, but so far it is incredible. The screen is better quality than the tv in my lounge, sound is outstanding and with loads of equalisers and audio enhancements which actually make a difference to the sound of a song. Earphones are great for freebies, comparable to Sennheiser.

Like not having to use Sony's software and just works straight out of the box with Windows Media Player.

Not really tried the SensMe yet, but in theory it seems great, dividing your music by tempo to match a mood.

So easy to use - and a wonderful sound

(4 out of 5) by William J. D. Johnstone on Dec 23, 2008 (Edinburgh, Scotland)
Believe it or not, but at the age of 60 plus this was my first ever portable music/video player so I approached its purchase with some trepidation and did a lot of research before deciding what to buy.

This NWZ-S639FB got excellent reviews and after using it for a few hours I can see - and hear - why.

First of all it is so easy to use - no more complicated than a modern mobile phone.

I did not bother at all with the bundled software apart from downloading the pdf user manual for easy reference.

Using Windows Media Player 11, it was almost literally a couple of mouse clicks and a few seconds to sync my laptop's music library (to which I had downloaded my first albums and songs) with the new Walkman.

I have read you can easily transfer individual albums and tracks from WMP 11 to the Walkman individually by "drag and drop" but for me it seems more convenient to do all the work inside WMP and then simply keep the Walkman in sync.

This approach may change once I have bult up a sizeable music library/video library and have to be more selective.

I have found the Walkman extremely easy to use - navigating through the various options and making selections is quick and convenient. Surprisingly so for some-one like myself with no previous experience of portable media players.

As far as the all-important sound quality is concerned, I am amazed. To be honest I am not much of an audiophile but the Walkman S639 sounds truly fantastic to me. I had thought that my Roberts radio and my Acer Aspire 5920G laptop with Dolby Virtual Surround System produced a reasonable sound but the quality of this Walkman is on a much higher level.

All in all I am delighted with this purchase and would strongly the Sony NWZ-S639FB to others, especially those who, like me, are not willing to pay a premium for the Apple name or styling.

A Thing of Beauty...

(5 out of 5) by Hodroulis on Nov 23, 2008 (Leeds, UK)
I just bought one of these to replace my tired old Zen MP3 player. This Walkman is an amazing little piece of kit.

It's so light and compact that you hardly know it's there, yet the build quality is everything you might expect from Sony.

The sound quality is just brilliant. Everyone who has one says that the sound is streets ahead of the ipods - and it's true. Once you've heard the rich detail and balance delivered by the Sony, the Apples will seem poor in comparison.

The screen is small, yet has incredible detail. One of the big plusses is that you can effortlessly download programmes from the bbc iplayer to watch on the go - a treat.

Beautiful and intuitive interface(just think Nikia phone), great battery life, and cool styling. Awesome!
