Back to basics
[[ASIN:B001DT02BY PANASONIC Lumix DMC-LX3 - black Including batteries, Charger
I bought this camera after much deliberation as an addition to my DSLR . It is one of the best and most satisfying product I have used. The handling is particularly good and the results are outstanding not in their absolute detail but in the fact that they create the impression of film which I thought digital cameras had lost. The response lag is for the main part undetectable and there are readily available adjustments for exposure focus colour correction and film type. In fact it has more facilties than an old fashioned rangefinder , its handling and response are as good and the results are overall better or at least easier to manipulate and print.
The fact that it is pocketable , has a rapid start up, and is discrete make it a powerful tool . The lack of a viewfinder was my biggest stumbling point, but, in practice, this does not seem to matter that much.
I love every feature of this and rate it as useable as my old Canon F1 which I thought was the bees knees.
Thoroughly completely recommended. I would also recommend an extension so that a filter may be used. A 52mm sleeve is available on ebay and attaching a UV filter makes no intrusion on the wide angle lens.

I also recently bought the viewfinder which is an excellent product adding to the usage of the camera at the wide end . Beautifully crafted and a joy to use.

Excellent camera
I bought this to carry around when I don't want to take my larger SLR camera. The build quality is excellent and has a nice retro feel. Controls are well laid out and the screen is large and bright.
Only negatives are that to my knowlege, so far you are limited to using the included RAW conversion software as Panasonic have not made available drivers for use in photoshop etc. This is annoying as I would prefer to use photoshop/lightroom.
Also, an external viewfinder is described on Panasonic's website however, these are hard to find and the only ones I could find were ~£170 which is very expensive for what it is. It attaches by a standard hotshoe however, so it could take a cheaper alternative viewfinder if the focal length was correct.
In general I'm really pleased with it and after owning it for a year have hardly used my Nikon DSLR, choosing to use this instead.

Great camera
I strongly recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for a high-quality, easy to use digital camera. It is very well build, the buttons are nicely arranged and the screen is large and bright. The colour and detail of the pictures are very impressive. Only the flash takes some getting used to (it doesn't open automatically) but otherwise an excellent product.

Stunning features and lens
Camera is a five star product, f2.0 lens for unbelievable low light photography, build quality, features, ease of Panasonic firmware updates that add more features and help make better quality photo's, Intelligent framing, scene modes, face detection, big clear display, movie mode, battery that lasts a long time, full manual modes for creative photography, good software and web download updates and it's pocket able... Simply stunning all round camera for beginners to pro's. This isn't a zoom camera though, it's for portraits and scenery/landscapes.

As others say, a great camera - just make sure you're happy with the lens and RAW codec
I'm not going to attempt to repeat what other reviewers have said (and it's their advice that led me to this camera). Instead, a handful of observations from the field:
- This is a great camera. The lens is stunning. The menus are easy to navigate. The lens stabilisation is wonderful. It's the best compact I've had
- It won't fit in your pocket
- Have a search for Flickr LX-3 and learn more about what this camera can do. I was finally sold on it when seeing someone's photos from climbing Kilimanjaro. It's very capable
- In particular, look up the Ricoh RC-1 lens cover 'hack'. It'll save lens cap frustration
The only things that may count against your purchase:
- The lens is, ultimately, best for wide angle shots - you will NOT be zooming in the same distance as many compact cameras. It's a trade off; don't expect it to be useful on safari (where I did take it, but in full knowledge of the drawbacks). You have been warned
- I hope I'm proved wrong, but the RAW codec for this camera (a key reason for my buying it) is not widely supported, e.g. I don't have it in my Photoshop CS3 suite. There are various debates about it on the internet, and whether or not Panasonic have requested this support, and how the lens distortion may be 16% or more that requires correction via the codec. Do your searches and make your own mind up, bearing in mind you'll be stuck with the bundled software for making RAW conversions.
Lovely camera though. Recommended.
