Fantastic DVD - I now have 2 of them!
I find this DVD player extremely reliable as well as being able to play almost anything on it - we use a lot of data DVDs and the memory stick is also really useful. I find it much better than other DVD players I have bought which have been much more expensive and supposedly superior but I have yet to find a superior player to the Philips DVP5990.
Buy this player - you won't be disappointed.

Very good - Upscaling too
I have had no issues with this unit. I don't have HD yet but wanted something that would benefit the HD format. Will have to see about that but this plays everything I have thrown at it and hasn't complained. Also plays Divx off the USB stick, which is a nice little feature. Paid £150 for my last DVD player that didn't do as much as this one, so it is a good deal.

Great player at a great price
If you do not want to shell out yet for Bu Ray and want a good alternative until prices come down, then you cant go wrong with this player. Easy to set up and use, very well packaged and does upscale very well. Ive compared it to a Blu Ray player for upscaling and it did a reasonabley better job. Never had any problems with Phillips players before either. The multi region hack also works 100%, I did it first attempt. Overall a damn good player for the price, you cant go wrong with it.

Fine piece of kit
Excellent. Seems able to handle a decent array of DivX/XVid codecs and the DVD picture display is superb. Watching modern dvds is very close to a HD experience, at least in 1080I (the best my TV can manage). Bit slow to read a memory stick.
