Very good DVD player.

(4 out of 5) by Ravinder Bhatia on Feb 4, 2009 (Kent, England)
This DVD player is very good on many fronts.

It recognises many avi file formats and plays them right off a USB stick, very handy.

It looks nice.

The upscaling works well.

It is great for it's price, if you want a bedget DVD player with the above features then this is the best one.

Excellent Player

Philips DVP5990/05 - HDMI 1080p DivX Ultra DVD Player

If you want a player that will play film media direct from a usb stick then this will be perfect. Maybe I should have given it 5 stars, but I have yet not managed to make it play any mpeg4 videos. Works a treat with avi's though.

The quality of the playback is fantastic as this an upscaling dvd player so it'll be great for your hd tv - Please note that I have also had it hooked up to a standard def tv, and the picture quality is still spot on.

All in all, a great little player that will look good, and work well in anyones house (even the remote looks good)

Does MORE than it says on the tin!

Excellent Amazon service - Arrived next day.
First impessions were that the 5990 is not the most solid of players - Corners have been cut on the externals of the machine, but once I'd connected the HDMI I found that the performance of the player is tremendous. I was really impressed by the picture improvement playing DVDs over my 3 year old non-upscaling player.
And the bonus - The manual says that the USB socket will only accept flash drives, but I've now got an 80 gigabyte USB hard drive holding all my AVI files working perfectly and able to scan through at 64X which only the fastest flash drives can do. The quality is way better than the old tedious method of converting these to DVD format, burning a disk and playing that. My only gripe is that the list of file names truncates at 15 characters - way too short.
All in all, a very happy customer (but Philips, please make the file names longer in a future firmware release).

Excellent priced dvd player

(4 out of 5) by Mr. Taiyab Darr on Feb 25, 2009 (UK, London)
Just got my Philips DVP5990/05 today. I am really impressed with this Dvd player, all my Divx files work superb and the picture quality on all my DVD seems so clear and sharp. I bought a HDMI cable a year ago from Dixons which does not work however that's the cable and not the Dvd player.
If you want a Dvd player that gives you a good picture quality and one that is fairly priced, which can also play DIVX files then this is the Dvd player for you.
