Very Nice player
Ok first of all the Philips DVP5990 DOES come with a uk plug, 'or at least my one did'
Right down to the nitty gritty, Im still testing the avi files to see if they work or not DivX does of course gonna try some Xvids and some of the more stranger avi's formats soon, Just put in a USB SDcard reader writter with a 512MB SDcard in it formatted to FAT32 & some pics on it with no problems.
MP3s as you would expect play fine via SDcard,RW, and on disc ,most players do know days anyway so no shock there,
DVD upscaling works very well with no greyness or blurring when connected via HDMI lead,
Looks very nice black for a change & not that horrible silver finish that plagues cheaper players.
Remote well its a remote does what it says on the tin :) biggish buttons so if you have sausage fingures you'll be ok,
Ive tested a few dvd players in my time and i can ,hand on heart, say this is one of the better ones out there,
Should you get it? i would say yeah for the price you cant realy go wrong.

Had this about 2months now, superb quality dvd player, mainly bought this due to the usb connection so i could play avi video files. Im using a 4gb stick and it works great!!.

Good DVD player - but still some blips
This is a really nice DVD player for the price, and it delivers very high quality picture and sound. Couldn't be easier to install either - just plug in one end of the HDMI cable to the device, the other into your TV, and off you go. I was very impressed by the speed of Amazon's delivery too, and it's small and in a briefcase-like package, so I didn't have to lug home an enormous box.
BUT. Two minor things that I think should be improved. One is the remote. Why so many buttons, when a DVD player of this type has relatively few features? It's really not easy to navigate and it took me a while to work out how to move around different root menu features. The other is that the machine occasionally sticks, and you can neither open nor close the drive. If this happens, give it a very gentle thump to the back, then try again.

Great product but arrived with a european plug
This DVD player is great. I chose this one primarily for the USB port, as I find it easier to put films on a USB stick and watch them that way, and also because I've had earlier models of this and they've been really good. The only downside was the 2 prong plug that was fitted to the product. I ordered it through amazon, however it was supplied by pixmania (who are a French company) and it came with a european plug. It was easy enough to change but I think since it was delivered to a UK address it should've been fitted with a UK plug.

Excellent Product
Hi,
This is an excellent product. Worth spending money on it. Upscaling is great. You can easily make it a multi region on following the steps give in the other reviews. Its sleek as well. Front USB is too good however if you are using a 32gb usb stick it takes a bit of time for scanning. I dont know about using 1TB HDD as I tried it and it was taking lot of time for scanning. So its better for me to copy the stuffs to 4GB stick and playing it in the Player...
