I have had this surround sound system for approx. 1 week and I am extremely impressed with the sound quality. The base speaker produces really deep reverberating, spine tingling, sounds. Explosions can be felt physically. At the same time the centre speaker reproduces spoken words that are distinct and clearly audible no matter how much background noise there is. The other four speakers produce the surround sound effect and these also do the job admirably.
At the centre of the system is the up-scaling DVD player. This seems to work very well also (though I have rarely used this as most things I have watched have been played through a Play Station 3).
The system was very easy to set up and comes with a calibration microphone. For me this was essential as my room layout is not square and the rear left speaker is much closer than the rear right speaker. The setup facility worked flawlessly and adjusted the relative volumes of the speakers perfectly.
There are only two very minor criticisms' I could make. 1) I don't really like the layout of the remote control which seems cluttered. 2) the different input sources are given names that are not always accurate for instance my Play Station is connected via a digital optical cable which this system calls the TV for some reason.
Don't let these minor criticisms put you off though. I think the sound quality is just as good as being at the cinema hence why I am giving this product 5 stars.
Sony DAV-DZ660
I bought this item this week and have to say that yet again Sony makes an amazing product! But before you even think about getting your credit card out, ask yourself what are you buying it for?
Music? Movies? Games? or just for an overall surround sound experience?
I personally got this system for my PS3
I thought since I have the Sony Bravia TV and the PS3 is Sony as well, the connectivity should be piece of cake.... well I was wrong
After a lot of desperate research I had to buy a digital optical cable (£17 - Maplins) that runs from my PS3 to the amp, and only then i managed to get all the speakers working while using the PS3
When I tried to watch tv throught the speakers I used the hdmi output running from the tv to the amp... but that didnt work?!? I only got a picture on a seperate channel for the dvd's,
For the tv to play through the surround speakers I will either have to use the SCART connection or the more commonly known 3 audio cables (red, yeloow, white)
So look exactly at the connection your tv and other stuff and think how you're gonna connect it all up with this system which in my opinion, could have had a little more connections available. Another downside is the setting up of the speakers. The screws arent very durable and you dont wana run the wrong cable to the wrong speaker, and then having to do it ALL again... trust me, been there!
But overall after settig it all up, it's an amazing system, which in other places goes for £400! It's sounds as good as it looks.
Crystal clear sound which I'd never dare to play max volume!
Does the job very well!
This is a good product from a good brand.
It does exactly what its suppose to do: play your DVD's in true 5.1 Dolby surround
The sound quality is good from the speakers and the sub woofer is awesome!
The speakers are very loud, and you will never need to use its full capacity!
The sub woofer adds involvement and rumble and is much more powerful than I thought it would be! Awesome!
It really adds depth to any movie you're watching and can make the difference between an average movie and a spectacular one!
That's what ive come to realise when adding the Sony dz660 to my Sony bravia!
The reason I bought this product is after watching I am Legend in the cinema I was amazed by the film.
And then watching the same film at home on DVD on my projector It didn't impact me like before, purely because of the lack of depth
But then hooking up the dz660 to my Sony bravia and watching it made an astonishing difference to the involvement!
I however bought this kit to hook up to my projector which ive yet to do, but can imagine the explosive effect it will have on any film I watch!
Watched Air Force One second time round with the Sony dz660 hooked up to it, and what a difference it makes!
Hear the fighter jets roar from behind you to the front, the missiles shoot from in front and whizz past your right ear! Wow! Incredible!
Another great film is Saving Private Ryan: gun fire from all corners of the room it'll grip your attention like never before!
I can't compare to any other product since this is the first 5.1 system ive had. And I can't complain because it does what it's supposed to do extremely well!
The only complaint I do have however is it takes too long to display pictures from the USB stick. In contrast the Sony PS3 displays them much quicker and at the correct ratio
All in all it does its primary purpose well. Looks great and is easy to set up. All speakers are colour coded to the ports behind the DVD player
Setting up the stand speakers can be fiddly, but once you've done the first one the other 3 are easy
switching between sources i.e. radio, TV, DVD and USB is easy using the function button
Can use the DVD remote to operate my bravia TV also
Speaker wires are long so can place speakers without the need for extension wires
I want to give an impartial opinion without being bias to the brand because I do like Sony, but finding it hard it to fault!
Conclusion:
If you want a good system, from a reliable brand, that fulfils its primary purpose of playing your movies in 5.1 and that will look good in your house its definitely one to go for!
Some websites say the dz660 is compatible with the iPod, some say its not. And my iPod didn't work so it is not compatible, but you can play your mp3's from a USB stick!

Well I'd say the most accurate review so far of this system has to be from M. Zontek "el nino", and thanks to his good review I'm just buying a Digital Optical Cable for my XBOX 360 so I can get the surround sound.
I've got the 40" Sony Bravia TV so obviously went for the Sony Cinema system too.. The only downsides I can think of this system is the lack of ports into the amp/DVD player and the instruction manual is a bit confusing (It might be me being a bit mongy though). Otherwise a quality system and would recommend it.
5 Stars!
This system is worth purchasing and BRILLIANT!!!
This cinema system is VALUE for money. I read many reviews and based on my own opinion I agree with everyone. I purchase this system yesterday and I am very very impressed with the quality of the sound and the price. The surround sounds is fantastic and makes you feel as if you are actually in a cinema. playing audio is brilliant, its crystal clear and sounds perfect, subwoofer is no joke, it will make you move. The set up is a bit time consuming but put it this way, your putting together a brilliant system so time is of the essence. Once the system is setup the modifications are very quick and simple. The machine more or less does everything for you anyway by a few clicks of a button.
To all of you who like to use the surround sound when watching standard TV, you will need a scart lead. Other than that the HDMI cable will do the rest for DVD/Blu Ray Players, so bare this in mind. This makes movie's all the more enjoyable
Purchase this and you wont regret it as i havent.
