Very quick and simple to record programmes and to locate them for playback. Such an improvement on VCRs in terms of the storage capacity, and the ease of location of programmes for playback and erasure.
Great Recorder... now sort the EPG

Functionally, it lacks the BT V-Box / Windows media centre capability of instant replay of anything. Having to select 'TV pause' and 'play' to track a broadcast is fine when you know that you might need to replay, but using a V-Box, you soon realise that you use replay most when you least expect it!
Recording capability is unsurpassed, but...that EPG is pants!
The analogue EPG (Guide Plus) is an horrendously garbled mish-mash that regularly looses its thread, leaving you reliant on Sony's own digital EPG that should be an embarassment to Sony's reputation.
I note that there is a software update capability for this device. I EXPECT Sony to put this EPG right! SOON!

help with set up

can anyone tell me why the guide Plus + keeps telling me that the setup for the host channel cannot be used and i need to reset. i have no top box or sky just freeview tried resetting and using EPG for digital only but no programme menu. re installed using guide plus + but again still no menu guide visible
checked and followed manual but no go????

I would definitely recommend this model.
