camtastic

(5 out of 5) by S. Mc William on Jan 2, 2009 (Kendal)
This webcam is really easy to install. All that's needed is to put the supplied cd into your computer then moments later plug the webcam in to a spare USB port on your PC. Easy. The software that runs with it is simple too and it's easy to record video clips or take still photos. What you'll probably do though is download Skype (or something similar) for free from t'internet so that you can use the camera as a webcam, not just as a -cam. This too is straightforward and it's great to be able to talk to, and see, other people for free, anywhere on the planet. The logitech software has enough little extras to make your webcam image more interesting - like make yourself appear in a 50s sepia vintage style, or hall of mirrors... The camera has manual focus. This works fine as the depth of field is good enough to put most of a room into view; besides, how often do you use your PC from a distance of more than a couple of feet from your monitor or run around whilst doing so. The webcam bracket lets it 'rest' on pretty much any surface or monitor top, mmm great. The built in microphone works fine too, try it out before buying a separate headset, but with the kettle running nearby it suppresses background noise well and gives good enough sound clarity not to overun an online conversation.

Overall: easy to install, easy to use, easy to then add Skype or similar, good enough resolution, good sound, good little extras. No need to buy anything more advanced.

Must admit to having problems with this webcam.

(3 out of 5) by Mr. James D. Lee on Feb 18, 2009 (North Shields, UK.)
I purchased this cam with high hopes having high regards for a different Logitech cam for my laptop. I bought the E3500 for my second desktop machine running XP Home SP3 OS. The image quality was excellent for the price and literally knocks the spots of the Microsoft VX3000 model (please do not buy), especially for stills. The user interface appeared identical to the one on my laptop and so no problems there. Even the software appeared to load fine. However, after installing this cam, I experienced problems installing other software, e.g. Nero 8 and Serif PagePlus 11. The problems seemed to be caused by registry entries associated with the Logitech files. These caused persistent "pending file rename" and "system reboot" problems. I had no such problems with my laptop cam running Vista and question whether the Logitech software is fully compatible with XP. The errors may never arise until you try loading certain other software. If not for this, I would never have found fault with this cam. Even after fixing the registry and reinstalling this cam, the same problems occured. Uninstalled again, and other software loads fine. Not being happy with the software, I reluctantly returned this cam. I found no problems with my recently fresh XP install, and so dissapointed with the cam. However, better image quality than any in the price range. So giving this cam a 3 star rating, despite the many hours spent attempting to overcome its software problems. Have had no other similar problems with other cams.

Excellent quality and works with Vista and Skype

I have Vista and wanted a cheap, but decent webcam to work in Skype and Live Messenger. I installed the software, connected the camera and it works. Can't say fairer than that. It fits onto just about any monitor - TFT, laptop or whatever.
