I just bought this camera after a long drought of not having one, and I have to say it was worth the wait. It is the best camera I've had to date...and has restored my love for wanting to take photos. I particularly like the colour accent (colour filtering) feature...which makes amateurs like me seem like we are doing something special with the camera!
sharp images - well made - menus could be more logical
bought this to replace my 8mp panasonic and haven't been disappointed.
it has a lovely finish (slightly prone to smudges from fingers) and the build quality is great with no creaks or gaps.
battery life excellent as i've taken over 200 images and a couple of videos and there's still juice left in it (you must charge the battery fully before using the camera...took about 1.5 hours).
some reviewers have mentioned a lack of focus around the edges of photographs but i've not noticed this. i've taken pictures of landscapes, people, buildings, water & animals and all have come out sharp. macro's very effective too.
there are some useful scene modes for those not wanting to get their hands dirty in manual mode but the auto setting does very well in most situations.
i'd never owned a canon before so wasn't familiar with the menu layout which i found less user friendly than my previous few cameras. i actually had to resort to reading the manual (as a man i hate admitting defeat) but am getting used to it now.
very quick startup time, quiet zoom, great screen, sharp images and good value for money.
i'd recommend this to those not wanting to lug a dslr around.

Canon camera
Camera works well in comparison to another small camera that we have purchased previously. Easier to see the screen in bright sublight.
Wot no Manual?
I have been more than pleased with the excellent shots taken with my new Canon Digital IXUS 85 compact camera they compare favourably with my Canon EOS 350.
I had hoped to experiment more with the camera whilst away on holiday in Croatia however the User Manual comes on a CDROM and is 258 A6 pages long. As it is PDF Format you cannot download this document and condense it into a reasonable size for holiday reading. Also you do not want to be stuck by your computer sorting our all this wonderful camera will do for you. I appreciate that a CDROM only costs pence to make but why not make the programme in a format that you could re-arrange? Minor point really as it is still a great camera as my pictures proove.

IXUS 85 IS
Fantastic camera! I bought this as we had loved the IXUS 500 and wanted a second camera, I was worried that this wouldn't be as good but I was wrong! The larger screen is brilliant but hard to see in bright light! Lots of features I probably won't use and for some reason it barks like a dog when a picture is taken, must read the manual to stop this slight irritation. Takes great pictures.
