Idiot's guide wanted

I am decidedly not technical so I will leave that alone and just comment that I was able to charge up the battery, install it after the required 2 hour charge-up, and take good (in my book) pictures right away, after brief reference to the Start-up Guide. More advanced information is provided on CD but I haven't got to that yet.
Two minor points: I could find no mention of the Zoom facility in the Start-up Guide and thought I'd made a big mistake in my purchase - until a more knowledgeable friend came along and showed me where it was (on the top, with the button you press to take a picture). So Canon, please add this for information for idiot's like me! Secondly, watch out about battery use - it seems the lens operation takes up a lot of power, as does the automatic flash. When out for the day, using the camera a lot, in varying light, my battery ran out before the day did. So perhaps it would be a good idea to get, and carry, a second charged up battery. Must look for one!
Overall though, I wouldn't let those points put you off, as it is really easy to use, also to download to a pc - either with the Canon software provided or with other software.

Canon IXUS 85 IS

Outstanding Camera

Ixus is a treasure
(5 out of 5) by Peter Roberts on May 10, 2009I'm probably just a Canon lover. I don't think you can go wrong with owning one. My 1st Ixus was an APS and it still works. Since then I bought an SLR and a DSLR and now this Digital Ixus to replace a Sony that started to die on me. The new Ixus has great battery life, it is easy to use and the picture quality is brilliant. First real trip out was my step-daughters wedding and it gave great results. The software is fairly basic, but if you're serious about photography you're probably going to buy some decent software anyway.

Excellent compact camera

It does everything that i expected of it - and it's really compact and stylish. Operation is fast and intuitive. The battery lasts a long time (a week long holiday without recharge). It has a viewfinder, which was one of the things I was looking for. Picture quality is fantastic and, not being an expert, I've simply left the camera in Auto mode the whole time. I cannot fault this camera at the price.
