Excellent little product
I was looking for an upgrade to an inexpensive but HDMI-capable DVD player as an interim measure, before progressing to a cinema system in the future. I chose the Sony DVPNS708 on the basis that a) it will integrate with my Sony TV and b) the man in the Sony shop advised to get this over the DVPNS78 (its predecessor)!
For less than £60 (Amaxon price) the unit is sleek and descreet and the upscaled picture is a noticeable improvement over the old cheapo DVD player it replaced. It also does a reasonable job of creating surround-sound effects from the TV's speakers. It has the Sony Bravia facility which will turn on my TV and select the correct input when I turn on the DVD player. Another useful feature is its ability to remember your DVDs and allow you to re-commence viewing from where you last stopped.
I haven't yet assessed some of it's more complex features, but set-up for fairly straight-forward if you read the manual carefully.
Note, the box does not come with HDMI cable, so you will have to budget for one, but given the low price of this unit, that's only a minor gripe. I have not had the DVD player long enough to determine if there are any reliability issues, but given the manufacturer, I don't expect there to be any.
Well worth the money.

Super kit
Sony DVPNS708 DVD Player with 1080 Up-scaling - Black As I have nearly a thousand DVDs I have been looking for an upscaled DVD player. This little beauty does a great job. Easy to set up and came multi region though that wasn't made clear. Gives a great near HD picture and good sound. Lightweight but well made and good Bravia sync so the remote is easy to use with my TV. All in all I heartily recommend it as a way to get more pleasure from your old style DVD's and it make a good job of displaying my photo collection home made DVDs more clearly.

Fantastic!!!
i already owned a Sony DVP-NS76 which worked fantastic, i wanted to get a player that would play 1080p, even tho my tv is a 720p toshiba (its better to push a 1080p signal into a 720p tv and let the tv downscale it, if the tv accepts 1080p) with my other sony player i was sending a 1080i signal.
This new sony dvd player performs as well as my older one, infact it plays just about anything i throw at it, DivX are handled really well altho most seem to have a slightly squashed picture (my older player did this too), this isnt too bad and for me it doesnt spoil the enjoyment.
Playing DVD's thru this player is simply stunning, i was originally going to get the samsung F1080 (pebble) upscaling dvd player but having had problems with samsung DVD players before I opted to go for sony again, im so glad i did.. if you want a player thats reliable and performs well then this could be the one for you.

Well worth it
I just splashed out on a HDTV so didn't want to buy an expensive Blu-ray player just yet, therefore I decided to get this player as a stop-gap. I'm very glad I did as the quality is excellent! I'm not sure how it compares to a Blu-ray, but it is certainly far better than my old standard DVD player. I wonder if the fact that it removes the analogue stage by using a HDMI connection rather than scart makes the most difference, rather than the upscaling part of it.

brilliant
For a few years I have owned a cheap standard DVD player but recently bought a HD TV so decided to upgrade my DVD performance. Also my old player wasn't some newer films very well.
I searched amazon checking reviews etc and was stuck between this and the Panasonic on a similar price (also HDMI)
I went for this as I like sony product having owned Play Stations.
I am very pleased - best bits:
*Easy to use & set up
*looks good clean & stylish
*performance is excellent - improving sound & image quality on all m DVD's
Resume play function is great (stop a disc turn of machine and return hours later to continue where you left off
*Syns with all TV's
Mine isn't multi region but this is easy to do. I believe there is a code that unlocks players to multi region.
A great product at a good price considering Blu Ray players are £150+ and Blu ray discs are still £20-30 each.
