Good overall but Noisy
Having bought this for my in-laws to replace an old failing video
player he was very impressed with all the features, Especially copying old
Video's to DVD. The only thing that let the unit down was the noise it made when the video player was playing or recording. The Noise of the video heads/motors is about 3 times louder than his old LG video player or any video players i own (the fan in the back of the unit is quiet). During certain scenes of a movie the noise is very distracting / irritating. I've read a few reviews and several people have now mentioned this high pitch noise. If just using the DVD or when switching the unit on the motors of the video player section turn off after a couple of minutes which make it silent. It may just of been the unit i received and may quieten down over time. As the In-laws have the TV quiet loud (getting old) they put up with the noise but i could not. I'd advise going into a shop and pressing the on button to hear how loud this unit is before buying one.

Euro region only
I would not have bought this if I had known that it was restricted to region 2.

Panasonic has let me down with this product.
I have had Panasonic products over many years and always been very pleased with the result. This is a company with an excellent reputation for its products which was a factor in me choosing this item.
On a positive note the picture quality is very good and I do not have any complaints in this area.I purchased the product on 15th January 2009. On 10th June 2009 I discovered I could not record or play any DVDS including pre-recorded DVDS. I contacted Panasonic who referred me to my nearest agent to take the item for repair which was of course still in the guarantee period. The DVD recorder was duly repaired and I collected it a week later.
Today the exact same problem has arisen so a further round trip of 50 miles will be required and I will be without the product for a further week.Needless to say I am very disappointed with this situation as I have had the product less than 9 months and a second repair is required.

Good Hardware - Poor Software!
The Panasonic DMR-EZ48VEBK - DVD Recorder & VCR Combination - With 1080P Up-Conversion & Freeview - Black is a well built and well specified piece of kit which will perform many functions reliably. It has a built in digital tuner, but not an analogue one, and you can record or copy to and from DVD or VHS. I use mine for copying old VHS tapes to DVD and copying from Sky+ to DVD. A standard DVD can be set to record two, four or eight hours depending on the picture quality required.
Solid, and fairly bulky, the unit works well when controlled from the front panel which is well designed with a multi-coloured display. What rather lets this unit down is the poor menu functions from the remote control. Most of us today probably read a product's instructions as a last resort - no chance with this Panasonic! It has the worst menu software of any product I have ever owned - unhelpful and unintuitive this system will have you cursing when even trying to do something as simple as finalising a disc.
I can't fault the results from, or build quality of this Panasonic and it is pretty good value for money - but if you are a technophobe beware this product, it will infuriate! The hardware deserves five stars but the software only two - hence only three stars in total. If you like your Tech you may well like this product, if not find one that's easier to use!
