Nice machine but there's a but...
As I say in the title, a nice machine and the service from Amazon was excellent as always but there's a but...
and that is that there is no code available (that's not available as in 'it can't be found anywhere' - at least not to my knowledge) to make this region free, so it only does half a job.
You also can't back-up your old films on VHS, so make that it only does one third of a job.
If like me, you have a stack of old prerecorded VHS tapes, one of the primary reasons for getting a VHS/DVD combo was to be able to back up these tapes. This machine doesn't let you do that.
If like me you buy most of your DVD's on-line and if like me you had a region free player beforehand you will probably have at least some films that you bought from perfectly legitimate sellers outside your own region (including Amazon). If you have, this machine won't let you play them.
Do I like this machine? Yes I do (even though the menu's are a bit clunky compared to the Sky menus I'm used to) but would I recommend it to anyone else?
No - Not without making it absolutely clear that, as far as prerecorded material is concerned, this machine's use is strictly limited to watching films from within your own region and that those tapes you wanted to back-up into a less perishable form will have to stay on the shelf.
That is a pity because otherwise it is a nice piece of kit.

Great Machine
I bought this machine with the prime purpose of re-recording all of my videos to DVD. I am pleased to say it works a treat and all my home videos are now safely on DVDs.
What I did not anticipate is how brilliant the PVR side of the machine is for the price. Had I known I would have bought this just for that, no more missed films, simple recording when the phone rings and then carry on watching once the call has ended - GREAT!

Performed above my expectations. Copied all my VHS tapes and converted them to DVD. A great performance.

Good value with a couple of quirks
We're well pleased with this unit. It's a definite improvement over our previous VHS/DVD combi unit. Our only complaints would be 1) that if the TV is off when the Toshiba is turned off, it turns the TV back on and 2) the editing is not as precise as they'd lead you to believe... burnt DVD's end up containing frames that we'd definitely deleted. Both are minor faults that haven't put us off. The quality of signal and general ease of use are impressive... as long as you READ THE BOOK.

This is a very easy to use system one it has been used a few times. I DID get a few unforseen problems when trying to record 2 different things. sometimes it flatly refused to record the thing i asked to saying there was a conflict but not telling me exactly how to overcome the problem and why it occurred. on the whole though, it is a good looking, easy to use piece of equipment that only requires familiarity to be almost perfect. Having said that, the thing does take a little time to boot up but I am only repeating what others have already said.
