Good value and versatile
Canon PowerShot A590 IS Digital Camera (8.0 MP, 4xOptical Zoom) 2.5" LCD
Having been 'Nikon' since 1985 and on my second high-end Nikon DSLR now I wanted a compact for my daughter's first camera but Nikon's Coolpix range has never appealed. Bought for just over #100 on Amazon the Canon A590is:
+ lasts really well (=two holidays plus lots of playing with setup menus) on one pair of (lithium) AA batteries
+ has great colour (set to +1 vivid)
+ has clever but easy to operate menus which change from change-nothing in easy mode to full manual control with Auto and Programme in between
+ good size controls for man-hands and children alike
- plasticky build quality (+ = light weight)
- wide-angle barrel distortion/converging verticals - but to be expected for the money
- full 8MP has frame size which needs cropping if you intend to print in 2:3 (i.e. 4" x 6") format etc
- bit bulky
Would I buy another? No, because I want a wider angle lens (24mm or so) and slimmer, metal build - which means Panasonic at nearly 3x the price. Am I happy with the Canon for the price? Yes. And so is my daughter.

Another great Poweshot
I Am really happy with this camera which I bought a few days before leaving for a big holiday, and it arrived in time for me to 'learn' a few of its specs. I chose it because my old camera was also a Canon Powershot, and I found that the quality of pics stood very well in comparison to my friends' pics taken with different cameras with similar optical zoom. It is slightly bulky, but you don't run the risk to drop it so easily like the ultra-compact ones. Plus I like being able to chose a slighlty more manual setting for my pics!
A great purchase.

A great camera for the money
I am so impressed, great quality pictures, easy to use, and lots of fetures if you want to use something other than auto mode"
If you are unsure of what to go for, you will not go wrong with one of these.

Just the job!
I bought the Powershot A590IS to replace my ageing Fuji Finepix 4800z and have not been disappointed. It's comfortable to handle, feels robust. 'Easy Mode' really is just that. 'Image Stabilizer' is great, picture quality is very good. I've yet to explore many of the features but, so far, I'm delighted with this camera.
NB Rechargeable batteries, I would say, are a must.

Excellent Camera
This camera is excellent. I initially brought the Fuji F200EXR but couldn't get a decent picture with it and returned it. Happened to stumble on to this on the amazon.com website where it had over 500 5* reviews and on the strength of that bought it. I must say I have not been disappointed. For great detailed reviews see amazon.com everything I want to say about this camera is covered there.
If you are inclined you can actually get an unofficial firmware update for it (google "wiki chdk") which unlocks a whole lot of additional features which Canon have disabled e.g. RAW, Histogram, bracketing etc.
