I bought this as a replacement for my old ondigital box and VCR. It was converted to multi-region by the shop so that I can play discs from all regions, in fact I have not got a disc that it will not play. I cannot fault the picture or sound quality which of course is dependent on the source material.
The unit is connected to a CRT TV. I live in a good reception area so picture quality from Freeview broadcasts is first class without having to upgrade the aerial. On the downside though, the menu is not as logical as it could be and I found that I had to experiment a bit in order to do retuning. A word of warning if you, like me are still using a 4:3 TV; it may not display a letterbox picture even if you select 4:3 letterbox. Sometimes it switches to a sort of midway aspect ratio - not fullscreen and not widescreen but not on all channels - strange, so this unit may not suit everyone.
For anyone wanting more hard drive capacity there is also the RD98DT. Overall then, a good performer but with a few niggles that should have been sorted out at the design stage.

A step up...
...from recording to DVDs. I find the menu system easy to use and I'm sure there are plenty of facilities I haven't yet explored. Manual is a bit off putting but aren't they all. Picture quality is excellent (I use SP and don't even think about the quality - it's close enough to live picture that you don't have to). Upscaling is effective. Disk size is quite adequate. Haven't worked out how to do series record, but that's not an issue to me. Some channels split a film with a five minute news slot and this system copes easily with that - you just set the first program and the menu shows an 's' against both parts and records them as two separate programs automatically. Very pleased with my purchase.

Easy to use with high quality recording
This is easy to use from the box (if you ignore the manual for the advanced functions!). Set-up is straightforward and so is recording, which can be easily programmed by timer or by 30min slots. The playback skip functions are good and the quality of the recording on the high setting is excellent.
I do not use the advanced/dubbing functions but as a substitute video for which it is excellent. Watching the start of programmes while it is still recording the end is also intuitive and easy so if you miss starts there is no need to wait etc. A highly recommended product from my point of view.

Toshiba HDD/DVD recorder
I read quite a lot of online reviews before purchasing this, & pretty much agree with what I read - it IS fairly complicated, and I would have been completely lost without the manual, but that's what manuals are for. If you follow it, it's straightforward enough, and it does everything I want it to do, so thus far I'm happy.
