The toughest on the market... until its not...

(3 out of 5) by Mr. T. Napper on Sep 29, 2009 (London)
Overall, this camera is probably the most solid on the market. I know atleast 3 other people with different versions of this camera and we have taken them snowboarding to crazy minus temperatures, bashed them down mountains on bikes and swam in the sea with them. In one example a friend threw one out of a 40ft tree "to see what would happen" and this beast of a camera continued working as if it hadn't even been dropped. In another, it was dragged behind a car along concrete. It didn't look very pretty afterwards but it didn't even flinch (neither of these recommended).

In my case however it simply filled with water. Following all the maintenance guidelines in the manual, checking the rubber seals regularly to make sure no dust or sediment was getting in the way. I took it 50cm underwater at the start of a week long water sports holiday and it completely flooded, destroying all the insides.

I will point out i had almost a year of good use out of this camera and having one that you don't have to worry about getting wet is brilliant. Its also had several decent sessions underwater without a problem.

For this reason i'd still recommend it. The actual image quality and delay loading photos was a bit slow compared to others out there but thats not why you'd want to buy this camera anyway. Its for those of you out there who will probably break a normal camera on a daily basis. Just be aware that like all technology, you get the odd unlucky case where it might just break. But thats what the 2 year guarantee is for. BACK UP YOUR PHOTOS REGULARLY IF YOU'RE PLAYING IN THE SEA!

A good camera if well treated

I have bought a couple of these cameras for work purposes on small tropical islands where conditions can be pretty tough for electronic devices - constant salt spray, occasional knocks against sharp coralline and basalt rocks and severe temperature variation from 18C at night to over 50C in some areas during the day. This camera is great; it does what it is meant to do, despite having to cope with the elements I expose it to. The finish on the front does get scratched very easily and I had a problem with the shutter housing falling off on one of them. Being able to keep it in my pocket when it pours with rain or if I need to get in the sea to access a point on an island or simply swimming to and from a boat, is great. However, you must ensure that all the rubber port covers are properly sealed before it is submerged. I jumped off a high point on a boat with the camera in my hand and the card and battery cover came loose (my fault as I smashed into a big wave when I landed in the sea), nevertheless after a rinse with freshwater and a good drying out it still worked perfectly. At least now I can show family and friends some of the cool marine life that I get to see, filming underwater is great especially as I can take it as deep as 10 meters with no problem. I have had and still use many makes of digital camera for work and pleasure and this is a great addition for both, although I'm only meant to use it for work... I have used pictures taken with this camera for large printed publicity materials and the quality is awesome, as good as some of the shots taken with my SLR. The macro functions are great. The price seems to vary quite a bit over time and I have now purchased three for others in the last year for work, all at different prices - they seem to be getting more expensive?!? Probably, because they are so good. Anyway I rate this camera a five and recommend you buy this if you are looking for an all round, easy to use camera that you can take wherever you go, as long as you don't scuba past 10m with it.

Excellent pictures . . . . Not so going in water

Hi i brought this camera for all of it's excellent features. The camera took amazing pictures, which was a suprise beacuse of its small size. The big problem was when i took in the sea to go snorking it leaked, and then it decided it would not work again!!!!

Anyway, Amazon were excellent and let be order a slightly different product which olympus have release. The tough range is the second generation of water proof cameras. Hopefully the new generation have sorted these small problems.

A great multi-purpose camera

If you are looking for a camera for all occasions then this is the one for you. I love photography and have a very expensive camera, but that's its downfall as there are allot of situations i dont want to put my Nikon in, and this is where my Olympus steps in. I wanted a camera to keep on me at work, and being a zoo keeper, it had to be very tough, small waterproof and dust-proof. The Olympus ticks every box, dont get me wrong, it cant quite meet the quality of my Nikon but it would be unfair to compare the two. On a recent holiday, i took both cameras with me, and i took far more photos with my little Olympus as its just so practical. I used it in the welsh streams, i hung it out of the door of a steam train, took it miles underground into slate mines, and used it on a very wet day at the top of snowdonia.
Its great to have a camera with you that you just dont have to worry about damaging, perfect for letting kids use.
The photo quality is very good and the battery life is amazing compared to previous little digital cameras i have owned.
I really couldn't fault a camera that works so well in all sorts of environments and still is sleek and stylish. Brilliant buy!

Disapointing

It looks good, it feels good and it should be at the price but i is not.
It is so slow it is practically useless. The lag between taking one photo and it being ready for the next you could have a cup of tea in.

Quality of photos is average, there is not a great deal good I can say, I am just annoyed I bought it and unfortunately I am stuck with it as I cant just afford to go buy another one.
