Canon HF10 HiDef Camcorder

(5 out of 5) by L. Hart on Apr 21, 2009
Superb product and great for the family guy wanting hi-def video. This camera records on SDHC card and built in 16GB memory which gives many hours of hi-def recording - I've had mine for about a year and not used it up yet despite my 2 year old!

Two things are not brilliant, low-light recording becomes very grainy - this camera (like all I suppose) prefers well-lit scenes where it performs brilliantly. Secondly the battery life (approx 2 hours on one charge) is about right for "family guy" getting the odd few shots (so long as it was fully charged overnight before you take it out for the day). I would recommend getting another battery if you're planning to film an entire wedding day (ceremony and reception), as the supplied battery will struggle. Also, make sure you get a Cat 5 SDHC memory card (I recommend at least 16GB), to ensure that it can keep up with the data transfer required for HD footage.

Besides these niggles, and having recently connected it up to my new HD television (using the SD component connection only) it produced absolutely superb results - I can't wait to connect it up via HDMI (don't forget you'll need a cable with a mini HDMI connector at one end for the camera - it isn't supplied).

HF10 -The Best so Far!!!

(5 out of 5) by P. Awala on Dec 23, 2008 (London, England)
I was contemplating about buying a camcorder for a while & settled for the Canon HF10-not minding the price tag. And boy, what a choice that turned out to be! It is everything you'd expect from a consumer camcorder. I cannot fault it in any way. It has settings for most recording conditions you'd find yourself in. Software is spot on. I was able to write DVD on my Vista within 2 days of purchase(just to be sure every thing's working OK). However, be informed that AVCHD only supports DVD -R. I had loads of DVD +R which are now useless to me. An extra battery should suffice for those heavy users- I am not, so don't need it. charging time is quick too. Camcorder feels really sleek in my hand and the stills are better than most with a reasonable 3.2MP lens. I am better equipped with additional 16GB SDHC card which I reckon will go on for as long as I want. The joy stick & instruction manual are straight forward & easy to follow. I think this is an excellent piece of kit that will give a special touch to those special family or personal moments. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Amazon did a great job of delivery 2 days after I placed the order, in time for Xmas -excellent!

Canon HF10 - superb piece of kit!

Already have a Canon HV10(mini DVD). However, as we were off to our son's wedding in New Zealand wanted to cut down on space (no DVD tapes). I found this a great all round camcorder and despite what one reporter has said I got some pretty good night stuff in Hong Kong and didn't even use a tripod! I shot around 10 hours of video in NZ using a combination of the inbuilt memory and the cards. I would recommend the inbuilt memory of the HF10 as this is a great way of moving footage about - you can shift clips between the camera and cards with ease. Have used only class 4 cards so far and can report faultless operation (don't ever buy cards in Hong Kong, much more expensive than UK!). However, if you want to do any serious editing you will need a fairly fast computer. That said, if your clips are minutes rather than hours you can do a fairly good job of editing by just deleting unwanted clips from the camcorder - something which is much more difficult with DVD tape. Well done Canon, a great product!

good camera

(5 out of 5) by M. Gruna on Jul 26, 2009
this camcorder, is really high quality and it's wort every penny. I bought it to video me and my girlfriend playing tennis and golf. The video is really high quality and when a HD cable is used (it does not come with the camcorder) the picture is brilliant. Even in slow motion it is still higher quality than dvd. One warning for mac users though. I have G5 mac with Imovie HD and when I tried to download to videos into to my Mac the programme simply did not recognize the video format. After a bit of research on the net, I found a programme called video pier HD. It is a little bit pricey (approximately £80) but it does exactly what it says on the tin. It will recognize the format and you can transform it into a whole range of other formats, including quick time, mp4 etc. Overall I give the camcorder 4 out of 5 stars and would recommend to anyone who is looking for a HD camcorder and does not want to spend a fortune on it at the same time.

Canon camcorder HF100 Great camera, very poor service

(4 out of 5) by Maid Marion on Jul 6, 2009 (Wales UK)
Sent HF100 instead of HF10,( which has an internal memory) because they were out of stock. No email sent before, they just expected us to be grateful for sending the wrong item. Excellent camera, though my daughter found the record button a bit of a stretch. Still would have preferred an internal memory. Sent items to compensate but unlikely to use GMS Fonz again - they even tried to bribe me to retract the review which they haven't posted. I wonder how many unfavourable reviews they have suppressed! They seem unable to read emails or understand them, I even had to provide a reason for my choice before they seemed to take notice. Came across as arrogant and condescending. Maybe we were just unlucky.
