True cinema experience

(5 out of 5) by S. C. Larbalestier on May 7, 2009 (Europe)
I had purchased various large screen televisions from HD ready to full HD, LCD and plasma and thought "great, that's me set up until Ultra-ray becomes available" - and then I visited a friend's house who had just bought this projector. Basically I was sold. The whole idea of watching a film from a projector added a whole different dimension to watching films. I liked the idea of it all becoming more of an event as one wouldn't leave a projector running all day long (and yes, it takes a couple of minutes for the projector to get to full brightness), but rightly or wrongly, the pseudo cinema experience appealed to me.

Pseudo? silly word to use. This is just like going to the cinema, without all the extraneous noise. Sitting 15 feet away from a screen that is about 7 foot wide (9 foot diagonal), seemed a little excessive at first, and borders on the accepted norm for watching distance vs. width ( which most tv people ignore anyway....), but how fantastic. The difference between dvd and blu-ray is obvious of course at this size and I would definitely not recommend putting downloaded video through the ordeal as it will look as rubbish as it looked on your computer monitor.

Budget considerations for any projector. I purchased a ceiling mount (though you can put it on a table) and also a screen (although you could paint a wall) but at a total cost of about GBP250 it has made everything very simple and tidy.

Did I just buy this? No. I got it from Amazon early Jan 2007 so can speak for the reliability too and it has never failed me. Newer and 'better' machines are released constantly but personally I cannot see any value vs. improvement benefit. It would never replace the lounge plasma for everyday viewing but to watch blu-ray in its full glory and in the best environment, I would not exchange it for any TV.

As a side note, put any kids film on in the lounge, attention span zero. Give them tickets and put the projector on? 2 hours free to do what you want to do.......any old time. Priceless.

No go with Mac!

(4 out of 5) by D. Hayward on Jun 25, 2009 (UK)
Beware, this projector simply will not work with Apple Mac computers. Apple, it turns out, have *ahem* slightly non-standard video output meaning manufacturers can go to extra expense to make their hardware work with Macs, or just stick to hardware standards like Apple should.

Dr. Bott make a dongle called the gHEAD II that will apparently make it compatible, but demand is so low they don't often manufacture them. We're livid with Apple because our business runs on Macs and this issue almost ruined an event we were doing, as well as costing us a bunch of time to research. Ultimately we've found there is no solution and got a refund on the projector, which is a shame, because in trying it with consoles and other computers, we've found it's a great one.
