Excellent quality document and negative scanner

(5 out of 5) by Tim1 on Jun 22, 2008 (London)
I have now used this scanner for a wide variety of purposes, from modern prints and negatives to very ropey images - and it has performed excellently across the board.

Personally, I ignore the 'one-touch' buttons, prefering to maintain control from within more advanced software - in this case version 5 of Photoshop elements which ships free with the scanner (two birds, one stone - I was looking to upgrade some version numbers anyway!). This software bundle really is an incredible bonus and will have even the most severely damaged images looking like new in no time.

The driver software allows you to perform a preview scan and then apply an incredible level of control over your images including full RGB tone curve control etc.

If this makes no sense to you then don't worry - the default settings do as good a job as anything else not costing several hundred pounds more.

If you are just using defaults then have no fear - from taking it all out of the box it's very simple to install and start playing.

The only drawback is that with older scanners you could set them going and then do something else productive with your time - this thing however is so speedy at the scans you just plough through your images with no time between!

This scanner comes highly recommended - and although the USB cable may not be the longest ever, it will look very sleek sat on your desk.

I was surprised and relieved

(5 out of 5) by Chabert on Oct 22, 2007 (Greenock)
i bought this scanner in replacement of the canon 9900F whhich had me very disappointed.

However with the canoscan 8800f, i must say i was agreably surpirsed and reieve.
I spent the weekend scanning Slides. and the result is very decent and fast.

In fact, whether with the 9900F i spent nighmarish hours to obtain mediocre results and was unable to perform batch scans with decent results ; with the 8800f, i was able to obtain more than satisfactory results (with good reproduction of colors from the original slides) and furthermore i could relax or do something else was the 8800 was managing the scan.

At last i am able to put my slides to cd without having to spend huge prices or spend hours on a single scan.

The price is fairly decent and the design is very sleek.

I strongly recommand this scanner.

Fast and Efficient

(5 out of 5) by AlanF on Aug 24, 2008 (Shropshire UK)
Routine scanning of pictures and documents is fast, accurate and of high quality on the default settings. I am very satisfied with the digitisation of colour positive slides and the bundled software is a real bonus. Overall great value for money.

A winning combination of scanner and software

(4 out of 5) by David SC on Mar 1, 2009 (East Sussex, UK)
This scanner makes scanning 35mm transparencies, 35mm colour negatives and 120 colour reversal film and B&W negatives a doddle. I have been very impressed with the quality of the scanned images, and Adobe Photoshop 5 has a number of nifty automatic corrections in addition to the powerful set of manual corrections that can be applied. Straightening and cropping images is also a simple process.

I read a lot of reviews before choosing this scanner, and it really has delivered what I was looking for - a simple solution to achieving top quality images from old photographs. I am amazed at how much detail can be retrieved from my old pictures using this combination of scanner and software. The ability to scan colour negatives is crucial here: they have survived much better than the prints originally struck off them.

I find the only drawback, if it is one, is the time I now spend removing imperfections such as dust and scratches from my old slides and negatives, and adding metadata: scanning is only the first part of quite a lengthy process. The end results are truly impressive though, and I would thoroughly recommend this scanner to anyone wanting to digitise their photographic archive.

Excellent scanner

(5 out of 5) by Morton on Feb 10, 2009 (Shropshire, U.K.)
After reading other reviews for this and other scanners for slides I decided to go for the 8800F though it was more expensive. It has lived up to its review and I can thoroughly recommend it. For slides it is efficient and takes about one minute per slide at 4 slides a go, about an hour to do a tray of 50 slides. My only warning is that one has to remove the backing plate with which it arrives, this was not made clear and I had some anxious moments at first but that done it works very well indeed.
