Great Functionality in a Small Package

(5 out of 5) by Mark George Hirst on Jul 5, 2009 (United Kingdom)
This model is part of a larger family of calculators, and the series as a whole covers a comprehensive range of functions. As the functionality is a given, I will focus on the form factor and aesthetics of this model, and why this makes it so attractive to me.

The first thing that attracted me to this model was the high contrast display, which is a god send for my middle aged eyes. It is an unfortunate fact that your eyes need more light to see as they get older, and Casio have seen fit to eschew the watery LCD displays that many models have for this superb panel, with clear dark black letters on a light grey background. It also features a back light, an excellent innovation if the ambient light is not very strong.

The other main feature is of course the clam shell design, which makes for a very handy and easily carried package. In days of old, folding calculators invariably had a ribbon cable that ultimately failed under the constant folding and unfolding. Casio must have gone for another approach here, and assuming it turns out to be robust over the coming years, makes for an attractive package, especially as it allows you to adjust the display angle to your comfort.

Could the folding joints break? I'm a middle aged office user, and will take great care of it, but in the rough and tumble of a school bag, perhaps a conventional design would be better.

This model came with the 1.11 operating system, so you will want to visit the Universal Casio forums to get the link to the OS 2.0 update on the Casio web site.
