Good laptop

(4 out of 5) by Ben H on Dec 15, 2007 (London, UK)
The combination of a very capable and speedy processor, 2Gb RAM, and an excellent screen make this really good value for a sub £500 laptop. It breezes through all applications & multi-tasking and handles vista premium with ease. The screen is incredibly crisp and clear, and battery life is good. Built-in wireless works very well - strong reception. Integrated web-cam is nice touch too.

Lack of separate graphics card mean you won't be able to play the latest games, but then if that is high on your list of priorities you'd have to spend significantly more for a laptop. Hard disk could be bigger, but easy enough to upgrade or use external or network drive if extra capacity needed.

In terms of bang for your buck, this ticks all the right boxes. Very pleased with it.

fantastic machine for the price

(5 out of 5) by L. Heap on Jan 5, 2008 (England)
I love my acer, looks good and is seriously quick. Formatting probably is the best solution as like dell, loads of useless addons are installed which are completly unnecessary like norton and acer arcade, all of which ask you to subscribe etc etc. not sure that you NEED epower to run your laptop as said on a previous review. Sounds very unlikely as a fan is usually on every laptop and vista, XP & ubuntu do support fans!! to sum up, an excelent laptop, good web cam, super quick, good batt life and a great screen! looks quite cool also (Believe its designed by BMW)

Excellent product and value

(5 out of 5) by S. Clark on Mar 10, 2008 (Essex)
Had this a couple of weeks now - very happy with it. It looks better than you might think from the images - the top of the case being finished in hi-gloss, piano-black. The technical spec is extremely good for the price and it whizzes through Vista's aero with no problem and multi-tasks, thanks to the decent RAM, with no problem. The screen is good too - one of the newer, glossier screens - looks good - bit of reflection however in sunlight. Quite light and portable. The wireless reception is very good - far superior to what I had with an external USB aerial on my old laptop and I am getting a good signal in all parts of the house courtesy of the in-built aerial in the lid. It does come, as other reviewers have mentioned, with a ton of Acer applications. These don't really slow down the boot time a great deal but be careful what you remove. I removed the e-Audio management application which did not appear to have much purpose and this did cause a problem with the sound. I don't really undertsand why this should be the case as the sound card should, I thought anyway, have functioned perfectly well with it's own driver alone - but it didn't. You can back up all drivers and applications to CD/DVD, using the Acer back-up facility before you start removing things and I recommend you do so. Overall, I highly recommend this machine.

Great Value

(5 out of 5) by Mr. Ian C. Wallace on Feb 14, 2008 (Honiton, Devon United Kingdom)
Very pleased with this laptop, the only concern is the small hard disk but I am running a large external NAS so not a concern. There is alot of Acer programs that need removing but once this has bee done the machine is great.

Looks are growing on me nice to use day to day. Also the thicker form of the case gives more confidence in the rugedness of this machine.

Beware! Acer new Gemstone notebooks are not Vista compatible!

(3 out of 5) by pet2000 on Dec 12, 2007
DO NOT REFORMAT your HD as the previous reviewer suggests. You cannot uninstall the Acer software because Acer notebooks need ePower to run for the fan to be controlled. If you don't have ePower active the notebook will overheat (this fact is confirmed by Acer technical support). This also means that your computer will run slow (ePower is a resource hog) and you have to use Windows Vista plus Acer ePower and there are no versions for Windows XP or Linux/Ubuntu.
