Future Proof
(5 out of 5) by Greenbailiwick on May 17, 2008 (London)This TV has a super-star line-up of features. It feels reasonably future-proof but then you would expect that for the price of £2000. The standard definition (SD) picture is a bit grainy and blurry on the edges but the further away you position yourself the better it appears. However this problem fades into insignificance when you experience the high definition (HD) signal.
Since Blu-ray has recently won the HD modern-day equivalent of the longer-running VHS vs. Betamax battle we decided to ally this top-notch TV technology to a 40Gb Playstation 3 via an HDMI port. Because the PS3 is bluetooth-operated, the box can be hidden away with just enough space to access the Blu-Ray disc slot. The main disadvantage of this set-up is that you need to purchase a PS3 bluetooth remote control but you save £200 compared to a standalone Blu-ray player and enjoy some great extras such as internet capability and next-generation games.
We viewed an episode of the Office on a standard DVD and the picture quality was superb-markedly better when compared to a Panasonic Viera 50" screen with a Philips DVD player. When the television is off it will look good gracing even the grandest of living rooms.
The option of inserting a coloured border is nice but the black then glass margin, topped off with a subtle aluminium strip all round the perimeter is aesthetically pleasing.
There are easy to access but hidden from sight controls on the bottom right side. Floating in the glass margin in the bottom right are the red and green operational LEDs and bottom centre an illuminated Sony badge (reasonably subtle). The remote control is easy to use and has a lovely backlit display for when you are cinema mode!
I can't imagine wanting to upgrade for a decade or two (if built in obselescence doesn't get us first!). We are chuffed with the purchase.

Looks fantastic.....switched off!

PS3 games look fantastic as do blu-ray movies. Keeping in line, Sky-HD broadcast in 1080i also looks great. However, a screen size of 46inches does not lend itself to viewing standard definition pictures. The picture can become a little jagged around edges and I have found slow-down issues on fast moving objects but I have only really noticed this on football matches. Connectivity is great and the set will look fantastic with any decor. Sound is good but I would recommend some sort of surround sound system. The remote control is large but is logically designed, will control 3 other devices (except PS3 which uses bluetooth) and also has a nice backlight function. Overall I would recommend it on its HD picture quality and design.
