Acer 5920 laptop
Bought one of these two weeks ago. Everything works great. Im not a laptop expert by any means but I have certainly used them plenty. I find this acer excellent. For £440 pounds it was a great spec and the quality is absolutely fine. My friends around me have VAIOs and I dont really see what the difference is for such a huge price increase.
Battery life is good. Screen is good. keyboard mouse - yes they all work fine. I oddly even think VISTA on this machine works really well. I have never taken a computer out the box and had such a simple time of switching it on and just using it. Brilliant.
Update : I have used this for two months now. Its brilliant. I do everything with it from listening to music, watching DVDs, Wifi, photo editing, internet of course. For the money I dont think you can do better. The battery last over 2 hours easy. The processors eat up all the jobs I give it. i.e. you really can multi task lots of activities at once and it copes seamlessly. Graphics are lovely with the vista OS too. Screen really bright and clear. Wifi antenna v.good compaired to others. Stylish unit and everyone thinks its out of star trek. I see its now £400 - bargain.
I note that I havent activated the virus checker, norton.

pleasing but..........
I have had mine for about a couple of months and although very pleased with its performance, i have found that the On/off button can easily be switched on whilst packed away in your bag by applying just a tiny amount of pressure on the outer casing. Very frustrating when you try to use the laptop only to find that the battery has been used up.
That aside performance is good screen and sound very good and if you like the 2 tone appearance very stylish too.

Very Good Laptop
I recieved this laptop for christmas and it does everything i need it to do.
One thing i didnt like was that the drive(s) were split into two partitions and were around 70gb each, and 10gb of that doesnt show up as it is used as restore, or something.
And ontop of that 30gb was already used up on the hardrive, i got it down to 20 by uninstalling a few things.
This laptop would have gotten 5 stars if it wasnt for the partition, sorry, i just dont like them.
4 Stars :)

Excellent, pretty, easy to use, plug in and go...
I'm not an expert PC user, having come off a Pentium 2 running Win 98 at home, I found the interface a bit over user friendly - by hiding (advanced) settings that were once easy to find. At first I was a bit disillusioned and overwhelmed by the change from '98 to vista, but I have to say I got up to speed quite quickly. I don't like applications that run off and do things on the internet, I feel a bit out of control, but I quickly got to grips with the settings and turned a lot of the features off.
The one thing about this PC and SW is that, due to unnecessary additional software installations, it's hard - at first - to work out what belongs to the initial operating system and what doesn't, I found this very frustrating. The screen is lovely, and you can really plug in and play straight away, I have never had this experience before; mobile phone, pen drive, network, ext keyboard, mouse, even my external monitor plugged straight in and the graphics card can handle it very well - a little bit of a refresh rate issue which needs sorting through one of those "hidden" settings I have yet to find. I really liked the look and it was well packaged and arrived quickly.
Norton doesn't have a great rep and many have told me to remove it from the machine straight away because it gobbles up the resources, I am not sure what to do just yet as I am still trying to work out what Norton is doing and why I need it; since Vista has its own firewall, and security features. Having said this I have had no bad experiences with it so far.
I will still give this PC 5 stars because it's a really great PC for the price, and although I have not come to use all the features yet, I have started to "Trust" it, and that's the most important feature of all.

Mid-range laptop with APPALLING sound card
For its more than agreeable price, this is good mid-range laptop. Having 2GB of RAM it manages to cope well with Vista. It comes pre-installed with a free 90 day trial version of Norton Anti-virus, although this can be uninstalled and replaced with a free anti-virus package (Avast, AVG etc). It also has `Acer Arcade' installed which is more or less a carbon copy of Windows XP Media Centre which is also installed... The screen display is very good. It comes with a built in webcam and microphone. It is a little bulky in size, but given the built in features, price and sizable HD (160GB) this is expected.
It does not come with any back-up discs so I strongly recommend that 30 minutes is set aside to make a full system and driver `factory settings' backup, using the installed Acer Empowering Technology, before doing anything. Three DVD-R are required and from past experience this could prove to be time well spent.
On the whole, for its price this is a good quality laptop.
Edit:
Having had this laptop for a few weeks now, I can confirm that the real let down with it is the sound card. Despite being Dolby Home Theater enabled (wow), the sound quality (even when hooked up to a Denon amplifier) is absolutely AWFUL, DREADFUL, APPALLING etc, etc. It really is quite shocking that Acer decided to completely ignore installing a quality sound card in an era where most people use their PCs for playing a whole host of multimedia applications. If you'd have bought a PC with a soundcard of this quality 15 years ago you'd have been satisfied. But in the year 2007/08 it really is unacceptable. If you use your Laptop for listening to music, IGNORE THIS LAPTOP and buy something with a decent soundcard.
