Perfect Upscaling region free DVD player
(5 out of 5) by Moviestar on May 27, 2009 (UK)I bought OPPO 981 as a present to my parents. I did helped them to install the unit with their 1080p HD TV. The difference was pretty impressive. Regardless of the content, be it Video or Film, PAL or NTSC, there DV-981HD did not show any Chroma Upsampling Error issues. Colours were smooth. I threw in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and watched the opening battle scene. I was blown away, in every sense of the word. My mother came downstairs and asked if I could turn down the volume and then noted how good the picture looked. For her to notice that, trust me, it's pretty amazing!!
I should also point out that the player even comes supplied with a HDMI-to-HDMI cable, which I used to send 1080p/50 - the most bandwidth-hungy of the signal types to my TV, without any problems, meaning that the performance of this in-box cable is up there with the most expensive available.
Unsurprisingly, the DV-981HD played Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS audio tracks nicely. The DV-981HD also plays a variety of other media types, including DVD-Audio, SACD, Audio CDs, DivX, Xvid.
Another important factor in purchasing this player was that it is a true Region Free player. I tried a few discs from US & Asia and they all played perfectly.
A good all-round DVD player. Highly recommended!
