everyday printer at a reasonable price
The printer is made of quality plastic and gives a feeling of durability.Set-up time was about 15mins,out of the box to printing my first sheet.Printing is preceded by a loud clatter before the paper races thro' at a fair rate of knots. There are five slots for the ink incl two for black cartridges. It seems a strange arrangement but isn't a problem. The quality of the printing is more than adequate for anybody needing an everyday printer. However,be warned, for my previous Epson i would use compatibles purchased for pennies, not with this printer.Shopping on the internet showed my ink will cost twice that of my old printer.Still cheap compared to other Brands but something that will add expense over a period of time.

Not all it's cracked up to be?
Not as fast as expected, mainly due to the lengthy start up time which makes this slower than my old printer for printing individual pages. But the real downside is how quickly the ink runs out... even in draft mode. Refilling it costs around £40 after not that many sheet of print, so is this "good value"? I'd rather pay up front for the printer and have reasonably priced ink.

Excellent printer, but ...
I was delighted with this printer. It was easy to set up; the software is very comprehensive; and print speeds are reasonably fast.
I have so far printed only one photo, taken last summer in Sutton Park, near Birmingham.
I got an excellent bordeless A4 print which did full justice to the photo.
Yes, it was slow, but it was quality not speed I was looking for.
BUT.
Next time I came to print in plain text the printer refused to print. The dialogue box warned me the Magenta tank was empty!
As the other four tanks were nearly full I felt this was extremely odd.
However, I had no alternative but to replace it, otherwise the printer was dead.
I took the Magenta tank to our local Cartridge World. Sorry, the guy told me, Epson have fitted a device that prevents us refilling it.
(Expletive deleted!)
I then asked him how a new cartridge empted after printing one colour photo. He assured me that there was no guarantee that a new printer came with FULL cartrudges. (Blame Epson, not Amazon!)
(Another bleep-over at this point!)
For these two bleeps-overs: two stars deducted.

Shocking cartridge life spoils a reasonable printer
This printer looks good and is solidly built, it certainly prints fast but the time for first page out is quite long. Like most epsons (in my experience) it is very noisy when it starts printing but not excessive during printing. What has shocked me about this printer is the dreadful short life of the cartridges. I printed 5 pages of a colour presentation and then it stopped because the yellow cartridge was empty. I replaced it, printed two more pages and then blow me the magenta was empty. I noticed the blue and black cartridges were also down to half (using the status monitor). I've since heard of people getting only 70 pages of text out of a black cartridge. My previous stylus 880 would go on and on on the same cartridge. Clearly epson are trying to milk the profits from ink sales even more than they used to. So my advice to prospective purchasers is ignore the excellent purchase price because the cost of ownership is going to be crippling.

Not Wireless!
Watch out, this model does not come with the EpsonNet 802.11b/g Wireless and 10/100 Base Tx External Print Server as stated. If you want wireless order the network version - ASIN: B000YCD9UC £99.
