Consumables are a problem
Like a lot of people on the internet I thought this printer was good for a couple of weeks...until one of the included print cartridges (which have a chip on them) started malfunctioning. It gives an error (U150) which says the cartridge cannot be recognised and this renders the printer/fax/scanner completely unusable until it's replaced with a new one. This would be a good printer but this is ridiculously poor engineering. Surely black and white printing should continue to work. This problem is very common with these printers so beware!

great little all-in-one
Good printing of documents and photographs. Photocopying is fine also. I have not used the fax facitity. Ink cartridges are a reasonable price. The only negative is the relatively large footprint of the machine so I have had to have a separate table to accomodate it.

fax is incompatible with phone and Canon support are useless
The machine does not have all the components required for UK use but does come with a full array for many other European countries! No phone adapter supplied this costs another £9 at pc world and the result is still that the fax function is incompatible with using a phone on the same line. The manuals and installation guides are the worst I have ever seen without even an index. Canon support is rude and unhelpful. AVOID unless you don't need the fax or have a second line!

Does what it says on the outside of the tin!
Having used this printer for quite a while and then seen it taken from my grasp by leaving my last company, it was natural for me to replace it with a like-for-like.
Without getting all technical, the print quality is excellent, (even in 'draft' mode), with it constantly delivering crisp fonts that don't smudge and when printing photographs, the output is slow at best quality, but again, well worth the wait! (Loading 140gsm photo paper is via the rear papaer tray, but nothing could be easier).
The scanner facility is superb, even if the software is basic, (it does what it's supposed to do), whilst having a fax at home is another 'must', with all settings easily controlled via the easy to follow menu.
I like the fact that the machine takes four separate colour ink cartridges, (black, yellow, magenta and blue), so you might replace one more often than others, but you needn't replace a multi-colour just because you use, say, a lot of 'blue'.
In essence, there are probably better machines on the market, (possibly?), but if there are, I don't need one. This does precisely what it's supposed to do and it does it extremely well, at an affordable price. In fact, Amazon's price was way below that I could find anywhere else and as usual, (how boring...yawn), their emails of confirmation are always spot on and delivery was super-fast, even though I chose the standard service, without paying extra.
For all of you who will only buy HP, (I used to be one), do yourself a favour and change to Canon. Print quality is excellent and at a reduced price, whilst XP, or Vista, are both a doddle to set-up.

Excellent printer for the price
It was easy to set up and it's easy to use. The colour photo printing quality is excellent, especially with Canon inks and photo paper. The inks which came with the printer lasted longer than I expected. One can ignore the "low ink" warning sign and print a lot more pages until the "no ink" sign comes up, after which colour printing is affected and it's best to change the ink cartridge. Changing ink cartridges is straightforward and I haven't (yet) covered my hands in ink.
Scanning and photocopying are also good quality. The software for scanning and printing is easy to use and does the job well. Compared to the all-in-one printer I had before (an HP), this Canon is smaller, smarter, quicker and produces much better quality prints.
